Women's position in Malta

Victoria22

Hi,

just curious what women's position is in Malta. I mean are they stay-at-home mums looking after family and household? Or are their chances at least similar to those of men?

I am asking because my husband is going to stay at home with our children and I will work. Wondering if we will get a lot of questions and comments.

Thanks,
Jitka

Hi jitka
From what i've seen in my husbands company (melita) men and woman positions are more or less the same, he has plenty of female colleagues and they have children, not sure about comments on that , i will ask him cause i'm courious now ;)

Err, I'm a male but my experience tells me that the younger generations have modern views, values and aspirations of gender equality but the older ones hold very traditional (mysogynistic) views.
(Bit like the Church of England really!)

Thank you Redmik. I kind of do not expect "older" generations to understand but at least I dont want to listen to comments "how it should be" in my own family.

participation of women in the workforce is very low - one of the lowest, if not the lowest in the EU.

However, whatever is the norm for Maltese doesn't really apply to foreigners - we aren't expected to be the same

If you were Maltese you would (esp if in Gozo or more rural parts of Malta), but not as foreigners

That is correct, I can confirm that :-)

And I enjoy the extensive conversations with locals and foreigners who also have free time during the day :-)

I have to disagree with all of you :). My husband was a stay at home when we first came here.  Although that was 6 years ago, so maybe things have changed. But boy was it difficult then.  Women mostly stay at home, so if you are out and about at parks, play areas, etc during a week day, it's moms who are around and not dads and they aren't very friendly to men in my experience.  Still, we managed, but not without a lot of comments and snide remarks.  One person even went as far as asking us to stop mentioning that my husband stayed at home, because it made other guests at his party feel uncomfortable!  A journalist friend of mine wrote an article about stay at home dads in Malta in 2007 and could only find 3 to interview.
The hardest part was for my kids, as it's not so easy to invite their school friends over for a play date, when it's only the dad at home.  I now have 2 other friends where dad stays at home and they are part Maltese, so I guess things are improving :)
