Anyone built a house in south France?

orcuttnyc

My wife and I are moving to Beziers this year. We'll stay month by month in airbnb's as we look for a house in or near centre-ville Beziers.

We want to be close walkable distance to downtown.

While looking at real estate I have come across 'model house buliders' ads.

One I came across claims to be buildable on a centre-ville Beziers lot. The French like to hide the exact locations ;)

The model they show is a 100sq m open living, 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 story house, for $267,000 euros, inc the terrain of over 400sq m.

Google claims them to be reputable enough and I like the idea of 5 years of tax break.

Sounds reasonable to me?

Anyone have any experience or info to share with using a French building company to build a house in south France?

Thanks,

Bill

@orcuttnyc

That sounds like a good price.

orcuttnyc

Yeah..that's my thinking.

I emailed them for more details about what the price includes, like bath/kitchen/laundry fixtures, hardware, and appliances, as well as the hvac system, ect.

These components add up fast.

Also..how much for a garage and petite salt water piscine and maybe a palm tree/ Package deal ;)

Then i'll compare the price to similar sized, relatively modern, energy efficient pre-owned homes.

We'll see.

Planning the next phase of life in France is all very exciting.

Dear Bill,

The cost of materials and taxes to build will make that you pay more than buying an existing property. As a foreigner things are really complicated. I would encourage you better to find a property already built. Also to look in good villages around Beziers as you have anyway bus services (some have a train station like Magalas). You will get much more for your money, pay less annual taxes on the property.

Wishing you a nice day,

Thanks.

You are probably right. If you add on all the accessories, it might be better just to buy a house, where all is in place.

Freddy Rueda

Yes when you consider fences, gates, tiling of the terraces, and you still have a house with no trees, no plants in an area where shade is also important.

Freddy what is your advice for someone seeking property in Narbonne and how would you describe the transportation system between Narbonne and the villages nearby? Which is your website?

hanvenwey

I agree that building a home in an era of high shipping costs and inflated prices related to shipping is an unwise decision. That's true no matter where you live.

Freddy Rueda

@hanvenwey

There are bus services every day in all the villages, more in school times than on holiday times. In general 2/3 departures per day and the same for the return in the evening (nothing the night).
