My rule is, if I don't know the number I don't answer, if it's important they will leave a message. I had one the other day, a German number. I have a few friends in Germany but none of them have my landline number. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. Same goes with my mobile.

I just need to know but be assured I'll not answer again like you said unless I know the number but also like you said if they know me they'll leave a message . It was on my mobile

You could call the shop and ask if they had called you?

I would say that's a scam Kath. I get a couple of those calls per month and I either block the number, or add it too my address phone book as "Do Not Answer".

If I answer one, I let them speak, then just say "angliiski" to which they usually hang up. The key is, these cold calls scam agents, don't like having their time wasted - if they spoke English, I'd string them along.  My friend in the UK, still has a landline telephone and gets around six calls a day.  He has the time to string them along, with great hilarity.

Most scam calls are AI automated these days; it's much cheaper. In the old days, when it was a person, you could blow a whistle down the phone.

I get a few a week these days to my Bulgarian number, just ignore them. If you have Viber it has a good caller id setting so if you get a call from a number flagged as spam it will show an alert as it rings.

Same here in the US. Don't answer if you don't recognize the number.

That's just what I did this afternoon when I got a call from a Bulgarian number but which started with +3** so I just got rid of it without answering, it actually said it was a call from Sofia.
