We are in the process of relocating to the Netherlands

judemg100

Good morning

We are beginning the process of relocating to the Netherlands. We are feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the paperwork and requirements but we will get there. We hope we will be able to get advice about job hunting, housing, and moving here. We also hope we can meet some new friends!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

You haven't told us very much, but to try and answer your specific questions:

Job Hunting.آ  To get a decent job anywhere, you need 4 things:

  1. Relevant Experience
  2. Relevant and recognised qualifications
  3. Speak the local language
  4. Luck

Housing.آ  Social housing is non-existent except unless you're asylum seekers, as a result the rental market is practically non-existent, this will give you an idea of what's available and how much.

Moving there.آ  One relocation company is pretty much the same as the rest, they all have to go through the same system; my advice is to use Google to try and find which of your local companies in the USA can help you and get some quotes from them.

While you're doing that, start learning Dutch; life is much easier when you can speak to people.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response. I am sorry I did not add more. We both have graduate degrees in health and safety and public health. We have started Dutch lessons and would like to move by next February or March. We know we need to find housing and jobs but we are also considering using the DAFT and starting a business there. We do have passive income as well which will continue. We are trying to figure out if we need to hire an immigration lawyer, and contact a headhunter as we have heard both yes and no to both of these. As mentioned we are just beginning but the more information we get from good sources such as this forum the better it will be. so any additional advice about the next steps is welcome.

thank you.

Hi again.

Apart from the financial investment requirement, one of the key requirements of DAFT is that the business you create must be viable in the Netherlands and connect to the Dutch marketplace, so you have to work for Dutch people/businesses.آ  It's really not the way forward if you just want to live in Holland and carry on working for your current US customers.

My understanding of the Dutch Health & Safety regulations are that you will need "Veiligheid, Gezondheid en Milieu Checklist Aannemers" certification - VCA for short; they have a website; this will take you straight to it, the top of that website gives you their contact details (phone/address).

Your immigration needs sound complicated, and I'm not an Immigration lawyer or international tax professional; my advice would be to consult one of those in the first instance.

One other thing springs to mind is that perhaps others like yourselves are already doing this; perhaps join LinkedIn and reach out to your peers on there.

I hope this helps.

Again, thank you so much. We agree with you and did consult a lawyer in Amsterdam and will have them deal with our visa. They have told us what we need to start doing and discussed our options with us. It seems that as long as we invoice from our Dutch company we can use the income from anywhere for the business. They also have a real estate agent to help us with housing. We will be traveling there in November to start the live process. Of course we are still nervous but feel a bit better about this move. We will provide updates as we go and hope that our experience can help others.

Best,

Judy
