Cost of living in Hungary in 2025

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Every year, we invite you to share your experiences with the cost of living in in Hungary, especially in the region or city you live in. Your insights will greatly help members planning their move to Hungary or already living there.

Here are some points to guide you; the idea is to provide average prices for each category:

What is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in Hungary?

What are the typical fares for public transportation such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

How much does health insurance cost? What is the price of a medical consultation in Hungary?

What are the tuition fees for children?

What are the average monthly costs for utilities, such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone plans?

How much do you spend monthly on leisure activities?

If there are other expenses you find relevant, please feel free to share them!

Thank you for your contribution.

What is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in Hungary?

Renting and buying costs have gone up massively in central Budapest. I live 5 minutes walk from the city center and I would have to pay 4 times as much for an apartment like mine these days..

It's 108 sq metres.

However if too many people decide to sell up the market would be flooded and the price would drop rapidly.

Once you are out of the center if you look up you can see many empty apartments that have ripped and filthy curtains. And out of town many cottages in a state of disrepair. The local council keep a register of owners. If you like the look of the place you can look them up and make an offer.

Other bills.

I spend 12 000 a month on my phone and Internet but have a very old contract.

Gas and electricity costs are fairly low and I keep them low at 8000 huf and 7000 huf respectively.

Water costs me 2000 on meters.

I spend time out of town in an ancient holiday cottage.  I burn scrap wood there and pump water up from a well so that's a very low cost environment.

Common costs at my apartment are currently 16000 a month. For that we get a caretaker and cleaning services and structural repairs.

Bin emptying is just under 2000 a month.

And I pay insurance at around 60 000 a year for each property.

What are the typical fares for public transportation such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

All Public transport costs 4000 HUF for ten tickets. Or you can buy a monthly pass. Disabled people  the elderly and children under 14 are free.

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

I do all my own cooking for 2 and often stock up a little if somethings particularly cheap. I probably spend 120 000 a month but we eat veggy mainly.

I also order spices toiletries and food mail order every three months and spend about 150 euros.

How much does health insurance cost? What is the price of a medical consultation in Hungary?

I don't use it.

How much do you spend monthly on leisure activities?

To swim or go to the spa every week and trips out of town I probably spend 15000 a week but more in the summer.
