Wild camping / van life

smouse92000

Hello,

I want to travel in my van to Bulgaria and Romania but someone said I should not be driving at night or sleeping in my van on the road because could be dangerous. Any tips, advice?

thank you

There are sure to be some places that are less safe than others like everywhere, but I don't see why Bulgaria or Romania overall would be less safe than anywhere else in Europe provide you take the usual precautions. If somewhere doesn't feel safe, trust your instincts and keep driving.

Drivers do speed, and overtaking can be a bit erratic, so I don't think pulling over to the side of a busy road to sleep unless it's a dedicated parking area is safe, but that applies anywhere else as well.

I've never van camped in Bulgaria, but I do stay alone in a not-very-secure house with open windows and haven't ever felt unsafe.

I have driven to Bulgaria twice now, and slept in the boot of my car, as Jane said, if your gut feeling isn't right just move on.

Romania and Bulgaria are not as bad a some people say, from what I have experienced. To be fair, I was more apprehensive about stopping near Calais than anywhere else!

You will be fine, just use common sense and lock your doors only have your window cracked open securely, most things only happen if you give the perpetrator the opportunity to do said things.

We live in southern Bulgaria are there are often campers / vans in the area. it is normal here in Bulgaria.

Fisherman also often camp next to rivers for many days.
