My US doctor is recommending antimalarials

Scott Feldman

Hello. My wife Lindsey and I are making our first scouting trip to Boquete and we are excited! Our doctor recommended that we take antimalarials. I have been trying to research the matter online but the information is sparse and conflicting. Do expats in panama generally take antimalarials? Is malaria even a general concern?

I hope this question doesn't offend anybody - I would just prefer not to take anything unnecessary. Thank you for your thoughts!

@Scott Feldman

Have discussed that with several Drs Scott as I am coming down end of February and they suggested unless you're going into the bush for a lengthy period of time I wouldn't worry about it. It will be our first trip down and we will be going to Boquete as well and maybe a bit of bush walking but I'm going to take some deet. I hate putting things on me as well but better safe than sorry and you can wash it

I've visited every country in Latin America, most countries in Asia and half the countries in Africa and never taken anti malarial tablets.

Looks like you just answered your own question anyway! Have a good trip. I'm in B.  now. Awesome!

These are absolutely great if you enjoy diarrhea. Everyone else should avoid them
