I think DaNang is a nice city to retired. I have not live there but travel to the city a couple of times and found it a city that is very enjoyable. Closeness to the beach and traffic is not like HCM or Hanoi. For retirement is a good place to be but the challenge could be the language, adapting to the culture, and coming from a different standard of lifestyle. If you can adapt to this changes DaNang could be wonderful retirement place. Check out some pictures on my post in senses of vietnam blogspot below:

Thank you for your reply, yes we had visited many places in Vietnam also, we were choosing 3 places in Vietnam that we liked most mainly because of facilities, weather etc and Da Nang hit the top of our list, as we love the beach, seems alittle more relaxed, less traffic, the weather is usually good all year round, cost of living, is close to everything and less hussle and bustle than your bigger cities, close to many historic sites as well and as a keen photographer its a click frenzy for me. We are well aware you get the good and bad in every place even here in Australia. Thanks for your input

Thanks Cabbie much appreciated. Yes visited Da Nang and many other places in Vietnam, we were looking at somewhere central, not to kaotic, close to the beach as are looking for a more relaxed way of life after very busy and stressful careers. There is good and bad in every place in the world, we travel the world alot and becoming more street wise through our own experiences and others. Hahah i had to laugh when you mentioed the coffee, I do love a good coffee and totally agree with you on that one, was very hard to find a good coffee.
Thanks for the info, if you can think of anything elase please let us know. L

For about 24%-33% of the year the coast from Hoi An, through Da Nang, to Hue is in the monsoon zone.

Translated this means flooding, roofs torn off (corrugated iron 'tin' roofs are extremely dangerous to life and limb), flying advertising hoardings. Bring rubber boots/hip waders!

Thanks Jaitch, funny how we tend to forget all about the ugly side of things when mother nature throws us a curve ball, this will be well and truly in my cons column. Thanx

Hi,

You should retire in Da Nang because of nice people, beautiful beach, fresh air ( compare with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh) and cheap.

Here's a recent article by an Aussie expat about commuting between Hoi An and Danang:

Highlands American style coffee....55,000VND....if you want milk in it you must pay more....hate that place.

Resorts.....starting at 195.00usd a night to share a room with ants and be 5km from a supermarket, so you have to eat at the resort for 5X the real price of food....

Seafood is okay....if you don't mind supporting an industry that is over-fishing the area to near extinction....crabs and snails are raised in ditches and called aquaculture...buy one and cut it open see what its stomach is full of...I buy them and bring them home, feed them cornmeal for 3 days before I eat them....I don't enjoy injesting human feces.

Transportation is cheap....but ALL the drivers juice their meters and the city buses REGULARLY overcharge the foreigners despite posted prices.

Homes for foreigners are limited....supply and demand means the prices are over inflated.

The movie theater......lots of fun listening to the mobile phones going non-stop....entertainment? Watch the foreigners getting drunk on cut-rate, watered down liquor and getting on an illegally rented motorbike...then the local kids force him into an accident and rob him or bribe the cops to make the foreigner pay crazy money for 'damages'.

Beware these people who say, 'oh __________ is the best city in Vietnam'....they usually PM you at the same time offering services.

Hello daCabiie,
-If you drink coffee and want extra-milk, you have to be charged. it is inevitable! You do not like Highland coffee shop, you can go to another places. There are a lot of choices.
-There are lots of services in Resorts and Hotels in Danang city, You can see Resorts  along the road from Danang city to Hoi An city , which are come from International companies around the world. You want best quality and  good service, but you hate the price. So how can they do business ? :).How can employees get to work and earn money with customer like you??? :))
-Seafood come from natural and aquaculture.(from aquaculture is cheaper). My family always gut a fish and throw it away when making food, and I am sure all Vietnamese do the same: make food safety before eating. (All the residues are in the intestines of animals, because you do not know what it eats)
-Transpotation, Taxi drivers I recommend you use Vinasun, or Mailing Taxi;(it is a good brand name in local). About accident, i do not know about that..is it real or you heard it from someone ..IF it real, i think it happen in the midnight?? Almost Danang people is friendly and helpful not like USA or UK
-Movie Theaters, I recommend you come to CGV at Big C, Almost i come there is quite :)

Hi. welcome to Danang.
I had been living in Danang 4 years and have intention to live here in the future. Danang city has a lot of advantages such as nearing the beach, the cost of living is cheaper, food is variety and especially, you will not worry about the traffic jam. the local people are very friendly and helpful, you can choose to live in some apartment like Azura, Hoang ANh Gia Lai View Lake.... the cost of apartment is fine. one thing you should take in your mind. in Winter, it rains so much and maybe flood or typhoon.
