Dear Fellows, A startup has offered me position in KL, Malaysia. They have applied for category 1 EP on 29 April. It is a new position. On 13th May, company was told by MDEC to submit an Employment contract which they did. Company says that application is still in progress. MDEC has 2 stages (document verification and decision). My application is in document verification stage from day 1. MDEC and ESD websites clearly state 5/7 working days for approval letter to come and this is creating huge anxiety in me as today is 23rd day since EP is applied. I have worked 10 years in Singapore on EP. This is going to be my first time working in Malaysia. My questions are

What is the general processing time for category 1 EP for a new position?

Since EP is applied by MDEC, it seems only HR can track the application and I can't. Is there any way I can track it ?

Do I need to worry as it is taking too much time compared to what is stated on MDEC website ?

Hi there,

Since your EP application was submitted on April 29th, 2025.

No need to worry in the website it stated 7 working days but usually it will take at least one month to get approval. Due to workload at MDEC and Immigration it takes time.

just stay calm, probably by this month end or first week of June you will get your first stage approval and second stage approval will be done in within 2 or 3 days.

Only company officials can track the process, you can take updates from your HR.

conclusion: No need to worry it鈥檚 a normal procedure time taking process
