Covid on the rise etc
(Port Louis, 2 December 2021) Mauritius’ tourism industry acknowledges the French government's decision to place Mauritius on their new "scarlet" list on a temporary basis, along with nine other countries in Southern Africa.
This decision comes at a very unfortunate time for the Mauritian tourism sector, two months after the opening of our borders to vaccinated foreign visitors. France being one of our main markets, we are currently measuring the impact this decision will have at a time when bookings for the end of the year were most promising.
Despite the French government's announcement, Mauritius remains an open destination and we will continue to welcome visitors who wish to discover or rediscover our island, in compliance with the health protocols currently in place. Tourism operators will continue to make every effort to ensure the safety of their employees and visitors.
Local authorities are in contact with the relevant French authorities. In addition, representatives of the joint public/private tourism committee have already requested an official meeting with the French Ambassador, Her Excellency Florence Caussé-Tissier. Official meetings with other diplomatic representatives will follow.
As a reminder, the priority of the Government of Mauritius has always been to protect the health of Mauritians, residents and visitors to the island. In response to the discovery of the Omicron variant Mauritius has suspended air connections with a number of countries.
Mauritius is very well protected against the import of Covid-19. Our public health protocols are widely regarded as best-practice, and we have an extremely high vaccination rate, with over 89 per cent of the adult population already vaccinated. Tourism employees were prioritised for vaccination, which means that visitors are welcomed and serviced exclusively by vaccinated staff.
The tourism industry continues to support the national vaccination programme, which has recently been intensified with the inclusion of young people under the age of 18, as well as the introduction of the third dose booster programme, which has already benefited over 100,000 Mauritians.
The Mauritian tourism family remains united in the face of this new challenge. We call on the French government to review this decision as soon as possible to minimise the impact on an industry on which more than 150,000 people depend, and which is only just getting back on its feet.

Plus I have since been here over a week heard pending rumours due to case rises that another lock down is pending.
Can anyone confirm this or
What a cry baby the Mauritian government is! Such hypocrites!!! So now they are crying about what the French government has done to them when they did exactly the same thing to Southern African countries that don’t even have the omicron variant reported in them! Utter nonsense, they must swallow their own medicine quietly.
These rules are a lot more watered down than many countries. I'm unsure what sandmak is complaining about.
The Mauritian Govt is not crying over anything! Why would you think they would be.....
Those who are affected are people working in the tourism industry or have tourism related businesses and foreigners/locals who had an expatriation project...For others (the majority of people), we are more worried about quality of healthcare provided with regards to Covid (death cases), IBA act and freedom of speech.
Concerning the french announcement, it has been quite confusing as the statement seems to be contradictory...flights are still operating. I don't know whether the french embassy has addressed this issue yet, but french nationals have been able to travel so far.
Anyway, for those interested, there's a live press conference today at 14hr on facebook platforms of defimedia, gis etc. The Minister of Health will highlight few points on the Covid-19 situation.
Put MBC channel no sign of the press conference yet
am i right in thinking that the french statement only affects unvaccinated travellers and does not affect vaccinated travellers - or have i read / interpreted that incorrectly? would explain why flights etc are still coming?
When Mauritius was declared red zone by french authorities, it affected only vaccinated/unvaccinated travellers, however hours apart, Mauritius was declared red scarlet with prohibition of flights for professional and touristic reasons.
@ Zulfi Ali The press conference has been broadcasted live on FB..Â
They gave an overview of the situation, number of deaths etc and explained how they proceed for covid sequencing at Candos
Thank you did you the overview in English as of yet or
Apparently all new arrivals have to go into quarantine is that right or
where does it say on the french embassy's website that the red/scarlet rules apply to vaccinated travellers - i cannot see that anywhere?
The announcement was made on the 1st Dec
The French embassy hasn't addressed this issue. They have to wait for further information from higher authorities :
"2- Mesures en vigueur à compter du 4 décembre :
A ce stade, et compte tenu des textes actuellement en vigueur (qui seront complétés dans les prochaines heures), tous les voyageurs à destination de la France devront, quel que soit leur statut vaccinal, présenter un test PCR de -48h ou un test antigénique de -24h avant le départ de leur vol.
D’autres mesures entreront en application le samedi 4 décembre à minuit et feront l’objet d’une communication complémentaire sur ce site."
"2- Measures in force as of December 4:
At this stage, and taking into account the texts currently in force (which will be completed in the coming hours), all travellers to France must, regardless of their vaccination status, present a -48h PCR test or an antigen test. -24 hours before the departure of their flight.
Other measures will come into effect on Saturday, December 4 at midnight and will be the subject of further communication on this site."

Also confirm as from 5 December Germany has added Mauritius to its red list.
Hi Standaman,
We are also very confused. We are fully vaccinated and due to travel to the UK on 20th December via Air France and a connection in Paris. We are unsure whether this will continue as normal or if we would have to quarantine in Paris?
I have emailed Air France and the British Embassy but not yet received a response. Anybody have any insight?
Dear Whitehalltrading,
I will be on a trip to Germany on Dec. 13 with Air France and on transit in Paris. For going to Paris on transit the information given by Anou86 will apply:
"2- Measures in force as of December 4:
At this stage, and taking into account the texts currently in force (which will be completed in the coming hours), all travellers to France must, regardless of their vaccination status, present a -48h PCR test or an antigen test. -24 hours before the departure of their flight.
Other measures will come into effect on Saturday, December 4 at midnight and will be the subject of further communication on this site."
This means you have to present a 48h PCR test or an antigen test taken 24 hours before departure of your flight in Mauritius. This was confirmed in a phone call with Air France yesterday. Please take care that in case of an Antigen test you have the right type of Antigen test as specified on the Air France webside. No quarantine in Paris is forseen.
But you should check further requirements that are in force when you travel to UK and certainly also changements which may come up the next days.
Kind regards
Henry
Latest update and rising. Cases over 5000 daily and over 60 deaths per day sadly
hi is that present figures , deaths are very alarming , if i am travelling from uk , whats your goverments rules is it poss or not
standaman1967 wrote:sorry but where does the figure of 5000 daily cases come from. that is just not the case?
Reuters says so but I'm unsure
That shows, give or take, 100 per day. With a population of around 1.3 million, I'm inclined to question 5,000 cases per day.
Anyone have official data?
5000 Cases per day is just wrong. its more like 60-150 depending on the day with 7 day average coming down currently. people should check facts before posting misleading information on here that could put people off coming on holidays (and bringing much needed revenues to the island).
Hello everyone,
Official figures are available on the GIS FB page ( we have around 80 - 125/150) per day. I think we reached the peak in November.
Figures for yesterday
On a side note, the French authority has removed us from the "RED SCARLET" zone. We are now in "RED ZONE" which means that travellers no longer need to provide a "motif impérieux" compelling motive before they can travel to Mauritius...
Have a nice day,
