Lord knows I hate to be on topic, but I would say the very first thing you need to know is where your passport is.  Then you should probably know where you're going, how to get there, where to stay when you're there, how to get a job, where to find the best donuts, how to pay taxes and why it never stops raining.

Hi,

Well, you need to know the security status, their tradition and local laws and the area map and important sites wherever the location you will be.

You can get your info through internet (always from various sources) and friends, forums

Greetings.

In my opinion the most important things you need to know  are "weather, job market status, living expenses, attitude towards newcomers and security".

hello

Fred

I'd try to visit the place first.
A week should give you a taste. Visit the areas you would live and work in

Before moving to another country, following information should be gathered via internet or any sources.
Rules and laws of the country
Culture, Weather, Language
Accommodation, like hotels or house for living etc.
Job Market: if you are moving another for the purpose of employment
Transportation modes
Religious and Political situations of the country

I looked up donut options before I moved.
