How to find an expat job?

David Vankerkhoven

My name is David. I live in Canada. I was wondering how do I find a job in another country as an expat? Are there websites for this? Can I get help with this from a company? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

03/23/25 Hi, David. The answer to that question will depend on your target country/countries, your skill set, and your language skills.  Some companies still hire people for expat jobs, but they tend to be high level jobs for candidates with very specific skills.  International aid organizations still send some people to temporary assignments in developing countries.

A number of countries have Digital Nomad visas that allow temporary residency to people with foreign, internet-based income.  A search on that term should give you an idea of which countries and how to qualify.

Of course there are multiple well know international job websites. Many countries might have additional ones specific to their country or region. I don’t want to set as a link but for Germany as an example look at: Monster(dot)de, Indeed(dot)de,  Stepstone(dot)de, Jobware(dot)de

In most countries one has to line up a job first to get the work visa. This means having highly demanded skills and usually knowing a high level of the local languages(s). Some niche jobs where one can get along with just English might exist but even in a country like Germany where there is a high level of English as a secondary language, one would automatically disqualify themselves from 95% of job opportunities from the start if not knowing the language. Opportunities for one speaking fluent English but no other languages might be available in IT and specific fields of engineering - yet even then it is the minority of jobs.

Realistically one can usually shorten their list of possible countries to the ones where they actually speak the language.

And me I will like to ask as same question

Fred

Finding expat work is the same as finding local jobs, but with a couple of extra layers.

  1. Decide which countries you like the look of - That will reduce your list considerably.
  2. Now find out if visas are available in those countries for your manner of work.
  3. If so, explore opportunities in your field. There are plenty advertised on the internet, Including in the jobs section of this site.

Would be much nicer to hear your actual thoughts on this rather than that of AI generate text.

I guess it´s better firstly finding a job that suits you, then a country that you´d like to live on (important to have a search on the tolerance of the expats in the country) and finally search specific companies that would suit you the best.

In my own opinion this is the most important thing as it´s not a joke. You´ll have to live there and work there for, mostly, a long time so it´s an important decision.

In my case, I searched for the companies that suited me best and send them a formal message directed to that exact company. That is a catcher, and it increases the possibilities to interact with them. Introduce yourself in the email and why you would like to work for them, explain a bit of your experience and attach a CV and a recommendation letter. That worked for me.
