Great travel books and authors

oreneta

I've been looking for great books to read, and I love the travel genre.  As an ex-pat, I find myself buying books on-line without  being able to browse through them as much as I otherwise would.  So, I thought we could start a thread about great travel books and warnings about crappy ones.  I was thinking that it would not focus so much on guides though we'll see how it pans out.

I'll start.

Anything by Paul Theroux

Bruce Chatwin, again ANYTHING

Karen Connelly, she's a young Canadian, I just finished "One Room in a Castle"  which I thought was brilliant...she also has written about Thailand, which I read and didn't love as much, and she has a new book out about Burma which I haven't seen.

There is the ubiquitous Peter Mayle, a good read for the beach.

I loved Susan Herrmann Loomis's "On Rue Tatin"  She is an American cook and chef and mom who moved to small town France and cooked and renovated and parented.  She even gives some recipes.

I also lean heavily towards sailing based travel works, as I've done a lot of that, but I am not sure how much they would appeal to the general reader.

Hmmm, we could even do mini-book reviews.  What do you think?

whoops, I didn't find that...I wonder why.  Sorry.  Delete the thread if you want...no need for redundancy.
