Ecuador Earthquakes 2023-24

March 18, 2023 ... 6.7 magnitude earthquake.


A magnitude 6.7 earthquake felt throughout most

of Ecuador occurred today with aftershocks, about

20 miles south of the major city of Guayaquil.


Early reports attributed five deaths to the

quake, one of them from falling debris in

Cuenca where two other persons were

seriously injured.  Cuenca is 78 miles from

Guayaquil.


Widespread damage is also reported,

some of it at sites in Cuenca's

historical district.


The strength of the quake registered

from 6.5 to 6.7 as reported by two

agencies that measure quakes.

The epicenter was 27 miles

below ground.

Updating casualties.


Thirteen are now reported dead and more

than 100 injured in Saturday's earthquake,

including a second death in Cuenca.

Homes damaged and destroyed.


Hundreds of homes were damaged in Ecuador

and in towns near the Ecuador-Peru border,

including 84 that are considered destroyed,

as a result of Saturday's earthquake south

of Guayaquil.


Of the 15 people now confirmed to have died in

the quake, 12 were in El Oro Province, Ecuador,

and one was in northern Peru.

State of emergency.


Presidente Lasso has declared a sixty-day

state of emergency to streamline the process

of getting aid to those impacted by the

recent earthquake.  14 provinces are

covered by the declaration.


El Presidente has authorized rental bonuses

for citizens who have lost their homes and

announced the construction of new ¨social housing.¨

The bonuses are good for 90 days.
