How to interpret US social security benefits when leaving country

Bubblecraftsoapworks

I thought I posted but now I cannot find my post, so I will repost here.

My husband and I would love to retire in Ecuador. We are both in our mid-late 60s. We are US legal residents and have worked in the US since we arrived in 1995. We receive social security, no other income as what savings we had went to help others with their medical and financial woes.

Now when I check the social security website, I read that as a US citizenyou can live in another country but as a legal resident after 6 months they will stop sending the payments.

My husband tells me I am reading it incorrectly. He says they will not send payments if you move to certain countries only, and Ecuador is not on that list.

At this time I am just plain scared to apply for citizenship, too much going on, lol

Is there anyone here who is or was in a similar situation?

Thank you!
