Shipping a car to Colombia

coscia16

Has anyone shipped a vehicle to Colombia?  My wife (Colombian citizen) and I plan on retiring there in a couple years and I'd prefer to ship my Jeep down there instead of buying.

Thanks.

I don't think it's possible as only brand-new vehicles may be imported with only a few exceptions - and there are numerous hoops to jump through and import duties and port fees to pay,  that will make it cost twice as much as you paid for it.

But you will probably be able to import at least some items, namely your menaje de casa, since your wife is a Colombian citizen.

Take any thoughts about importing a used car into Colombia, been there and done that, 10 years ago when I was pulling the trigger (Los Angeles, California to Medellin, COL) I would have loved to import my 3 cars, at least two of them, one was a 2014 TOYOTA FJ and the other a 2012 Ford F-150, researched it from every angle and nope makes no sense.

I sold my 3 vehicles before I left California for the last time and never looked back. I ended up purchasing a new KIA and also a Mazda here in Medellin, still have the KIA.

Hope this helps and BTW I would have loved to have both of my cars imported.

@OsageArcher

I'd like to get my Jeep down there somehow given that it's paid off and the price of cars in Colombia.

Hoops meaning documentation, or payoffs?

Thanks.

Thanks for replying.

Out of curiosity, approximately what would a 0-5 year old car cost, for example a small SUV?  I heard the taxes on purchasing a vehicle are astronomical.

@coscia16 - there are simply no work-around's for importing a used vehicle, must be brand new then your faced with roughly 40% import taxes/tariffs if not more.

The only exception is if the car is a vintage 35 plus year old classic.

Yes cars keep their value here especially Toyota's and the like.

As for the cost of used vehicles it' just depends on the make, model, mileage, condition, age, etc. like anywhere but as an example, since you mentioned a Jeep, a 4 year old used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 34,000 km and good condition is roughly 135,000,000 pesos, just an example.
