When you are not fluent in portuguese

Texanbrazil

Hello everyone,
I live in Foz do Iguacu, I moved here 3 years ago from Houston, Texas.
I am still trying to learn Portuguese (I know I am a slow learner).
It can be fun and difficult.
Still trying to get a drivers license. Wish there was a study guide in English.

How do you survive? I have been told if i am not fluent in portuguese not to bother

Texanbrazil

I carry an app and it helps when needing items for the house. In addition my teacher helps me on more difficult situations. First year was tough getting RNE with language barrier, Still trying to get a driver's license.
Many doctors speak some English so only issue is calling for an appointment.
Mercados no problem just find what I need and pay.
It is tough but many friends here and they help

I hope that I'm not one of the ones who made you feel that way.  If so, I'm sorry -- didn't mean to.
Brazilians love their country, and love their language.  If you show affection for the first and  an effort to learn the second, they'll take you to their hearts.  They also believe that Portuguese is one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn.  Most linguists disagree, but one pleasant result for expats is that their expectations are low, so your Portuguese will be met with praise, now matter how imperfect. ;-)

What is the app you use?

Dict Box Portuguese - English or  English to Portuguese
Gives words and verbal pronunciation and some small sentences

Texan brazil,

Do you have a drivers license already from where you came? If so the process is very easy.

I do have a drivers license from Texas. I applied for BR license. paid and they sent me to a clinic for a test. The clinic would not allow me to take the test since I did not speak Portuguese well and was told I had to learn Portuguese. Now Friday I went back to detran  with a policia agent and was told that it was not true that I has to speak Portuguese and go back to the clinic. They said it may be difficult to take the exam without being able to read Portuguese, but I can read better than speaking. (Brazilian's speak faster than my brain can process) :)
I have lived here more than 180 days so I am required to have a license. If you know an easy way, please let me know. Even a study guide in English would help me.
I chuckle as to everyone is required to have a physiology exam for a license with many of the drivers I see and how did they pass!
I bought 2 cars and pay taxes on each here  but I cannot get a license???

Yes it is true I use it and with great success because I am slowly forgetting Portuguese because here where I live we speak English more and so I use this program to write something so as to remember my mother tongue.

Hello everyone,

From these different posts, a new discussion has been created on the Brazil forum.

Do you have any other ideas or tips for slow learners or people having difficulties with the Portuguese language?

We could help them out  :top:
