Is lost What's App Safe?
My daughter just came up (Northeastern Brazil) from Rio where she lost her IPhone (with What`s App) on the street during Carnaval. Is her / my conversations / connections vulnerable now?

@roddiesho
That’s unfortunate. I hope she had FACE ID or Fingerprint login enabled for the phone itself. Anyway, here’s what they suggest you do from Whatsapp;
1. Lock Your SIM Card
• Contact your mobile service provider and request to suspend or block your SIM card.
• This prevents anyone from using your number to verify WhatsApp on another device.
2. Log Into WhatsApp on a New Phone
• If you get a new phone with the same number, install WhatsApp and verify your account.
• This will automatically log out the app from your lost phone.
3. Deactivate Your WhatsApp Account
• If you can’t get a new phone immediately, email WhatsApp at support@whatsapp.com with the subject: “Lost/Stolen Phone: Please deactivate my account”.
• Include your phone number in international format (e.g., +55 for Brazil, +1 for the US).
Other things you may want to do. Here are Android and Iphone instructions. I believe some folks here have had personal experiences doing the following:
For Android (Google’s Find My Device)
1. Go to: Find My Device on another device.
2. Sign in with your Google account.
3. Choose your lost device.
4. Select:
• Play Sound (to locate if nearby).
• Secure Device (locks phone and logs out of Google).
• Erase Device (deletes all data, but you can’t track it afterward).
For iPhone (Apple’s Find My iPhone)
1. Go to: iCloud Find My iPhone or use another Apple device.
2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
3. Select your lost iPhone.
4. Choose:
• Play Sound (to find if nearby).
• Lost Mode (locks iPhone and shows a message with your contact).
• Erase iPhone (deletes everything, but you can’t track it after this).
Extra Steps
• Report to your carrier: They can disable your SIM card.
• Change important passwords: Google, Apple ID, banking apps, etc.
• Notify the police if stolen.
ps.. Hope she had a backup somewhere in the cloud or at home. Rebuilding a phone can be a PIA.

I think that you can remove your daughter from your contacts and your WhatsApp conversations will be deleted. I'm not sure, though. Blocking her will not remove your conversations.
Just a side story about my “LOST” phone experience during Carnival week in RJ around 2006. My Carioca friend at the time was nuts about Carnival. She insisted we attend a BLOCK event in Copacabana. Against my better judgment I agreed to go as she assured me it would be a safe and enjoyable time. Well it didn’t take 5 minutes before the local thieves located this gringo. They were very adept at the bump one side then bump the other to get you off kilter. Then there little hands riddled every pocket within seconds. I grabbed tightly to my wallet in my right hand but they managed to get a hold on my dumb nokia burner phone. FYI - I only had about 50 reals on me. So even if they got my wallet, no biggie. But it’s the principle of the thing. BTW the kid who ran off with my phone was probably a ten year old girl. Just one of the many reasons I’m not a fan of Carnival. I’m guessing hundreds of gringos “LOST” their phones this week. Thank God my loss was not a smartphone. I usually don’t go to crowded places anymore, but if I have to I often leave my phone behind in a safe place.

My Brazilian girlfriend told me not to take a camera, phone, jewelry or more than beer money to Copacabana beach in 2005. Five little boys almost got my R$10 out of my pocket on the sidewalk before I even set foot on the sand. Welcome to Rio! I still had beer money, I was happy.

How do you travel without Uber?
@alan279
Ya, this particular Carioca I knew at the time was always looking at the world through rose colored glasses. She was from the upper class and thought everything was WONDERFUL in RJ. My first gf in RJ was much more street savvy. She NEVER would have suggested we attend such an event. Also, she never let me go outside on the street with a phone or any valuables. She would have me put a 20 in my shoe for cab fare, and maybe 30-40 reals in three different pockets! I learned a lot from her. The other thing she taught me was to look, look and look again. If you see something, cross the street way before you get there. Never sit next to a sidewalk at a restaurant or bar. The list is endless. She was very clever.
@roddiesho
Your daughter should go to icloud.com and disable her iPhone.
@alan279
Unless she has another Apple device (MacBook, iPad) with her, in which case disabling her iPhone is simpler.

How do you travel without Uber?
@alan279 Actually the last time we were in Fortaleza we did not use "UBER" As you probably know by now, WE KNOW PEOPLE people, so yes, he was an UBER Driver, but we commissioned him to pick us up at the mall. In Sao Paulo we had our "UBER" driver pick us up at the house and take us to the airport. We kinda walk a different road, all this was done on the side, so we did not use the app. We are so well connected that we usually have people.

@bepmoht I want to thank you and @alan279 for the great answers. I will pass it on to her. For the record her phone was not stolen, she was running up and down the taxi lane trying to get a ride and lost her focus. She does not know where it went to, but she was so preoccupied that she did not notice until the next morning. Unfortunately as it is, she barely keeps in contact with me when she has a phone, so it may be hard to tell her all the good strategies mentioned.
One time there were two convicts that escaped from a local prison and were on the run in our village. I left a message that we were sheltered in place and locked down in fear and that Mom and Dad loved her dearly.... she did not get the message for days after they were captured. I often joke with her that she is so absent from us that if we were kidnapped, they would not be able to demand a ransom because it would go directly to voicemail.

I live way away from that city RJ these days. Calm, secure,safe in Pancas ES. No pick pockets or other vermin call this Berg home. Only hard working “Salt of the Earth “ folks. BTW, there’s no Uber here, no Buses just taxis. A 20 note gets you anywhere within the city limits.

Maybe she could remember to call her dad when she gets into trouble?
@roddiesho
Sounds like my second brother. He routinely turns his phone off and usually only has it with him when he leaves his house. He still has a LANDLINE. 🤪

Not really different from Ilhéus, but we got Uber, free buses for old folks for 20 miles north and south along the beaches within the city limits. And a great climate.
Seems like I am replying to myself here. 🤔
Or is this forum no longered threaded?
Or, was it ever threaded?
@bepmoht
Did I not reply to you about Uber, buses and th climate in Ilhéus?
@roddiesho
Report it to the cops...you might even get it back. I did. So did a friend of mine.

@bepmoht, smart lady that gf. However, you must have found someone smarter since she did not make the cut.
Re: carrying beer money and / or cell phones - has anyone have problems with "Rfid Blocking Undergarment Waist Pouch"? Mind you - no one should be flashing phones or cash around - and you may still need to keep some change for the beer in the pocket - to appear like others. This change in pocket is always at risk but with the undergarrnent waist pouch, you could keep the most important stuff hidden from others at all times. You would only access the contents of the pouch where people cannot see you - i.e. bathroom etc..
Would that be a viable alternative other than keeping cash in shoes, underwear, bras for ladies, etc...?
@alan279
Ya, you replied. I’m curious about what browser you’re using. I’ve read some browsers or settings in the browser can interfere with threads. Personally I’m not familiar much with the functionality of threads, especially on sites like this.
Good luck.
I spent a week in Rio a few years ago without a problem.

Interesting but sad story about Marielle Franco. Getting into Politics can be dangerous....
On the topic, has anyone seen the movie "I'm Still Here"? What do you think about that? Is that an authentic depiction of how Brazil was at that time?
