Welcome, Rob!  Where are you moving from?  How much stuff do you plan to move?  Where and how much make a big difference.  Where-to going from your intro post, is Pernambuco.  That part is rather easy, because you have a MAJOR port nearby in Suape.

If you DO decide to ship a container, it's essential to find a mover with actual Brazil experience:  Brazil is a very different animal, general international experience is not enough, and you don't want to have a mover learn-by-doing on your dime. 

I knew that I'd found the right people when I asked the gentleman I was talking to whether he had Brazil experience and he started laughing, and answered, "I used to think that China was the toughest move I ever did, until I moved a client to Brazil."  He and his company knew what they were doing.  A lot don't.

Basically just some clothes, my framed degrees and certificates, artwork, some important books for my profession and a few pieces of music equipment.

everything else I need is at my home there now.

I am in Tennessee. And moving to Pernambuco coast.

From the estimates I’ve gotten so far it’s going to be expensive.  USPS says approximately 190USD for a 20# box. I’m going to get a cost from DHL they have moved some of my things before.

UPS is very unreliable from past experiences.

I have been importing from São Paulo for 3 years so I’m very experienced in dealing with Brazilian customs.

But this will be my first time shipping to Brazil other than certified documents which was also truly an experience.
