SUS for Dummies
@alan279
Is this SUS or a private clinic?
mberigan
I saw another ophthalmologist. The lens implanted in my cataract surgery a month ago is a tiny bit out of position, resulting in poor vision and dilation. It may not be correctable.
I complained to the eye clinic via WhatsApp. The surgeon filed a complaint with Policia Civil against me.
An English speaking attorney near me has a conflict of interest. He will refer me to a public defender to make a deal with the surgeon.
@mberigan
SUS subcontracts to a private clinic and the private clinic subcontracts surgeries to a private eye hospital. The clinic and hospital are run by the same family.
@alan279
I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience and now messed up eye!!!
We have an ophthalmologist in the family that is superb and have had great success with her - but she is not SUS... only does specially referred clients that lack private insurance.

As several of my friends suggested, bring lots of money to live in Brazil.

So sad to hear that this is happening to you. I am not an expert but my brother-in-law is an eye surgeon who does all kind of cataract and associated cosmetic surgery. I was told that cataract surgery is very common and most problems can be fixed unless there is a complication from preexisting conditions and / or other health problems.
I would recommend finding another more experienced and more reputable eye surgeon to look at a possible remedy.
I suspect that complaining by WhatsApp is not a good idea especially when dealing with a surgeon. Have you tried talking to the surgeon about your concerns? At least you will know whether she will be able to help or not.
May be this is a sufficient reason to reach out to surgeons in São Paulo - but I would definitely be looking for extremely good reviews as having a good eye-sight is very important - esp. if you intend to continue to do beach-triking.
Good luck.
Another eye surgeon says that my implanted lens is a tiny bit to the front of where it should be. My eye is dilated and my vision less than optimal.
The strategy is to do the cataract surgery in the other eye, wait a month and get new glasses.
Fortunately, good vision is not required to trike the beach.
@Alan279
The thought that an expat can be vulnerable to penalty or worse for standing up for his or her rights and complaining about a surgeon's negligence is frightening. I hope everything works out for you. Please update if you resolve it.
@ibdegen
Please remember that free speech is not a right in Brazil.
@Pablo888
Could you privately recommend your eye surgeons in Sao Paulo?
Thanks.
Alan
Someone at the eye hospital filed a complaint with Policia Civil against me.
I've seen an ophthalmologist and an eye surgeon at another eye hospital and they say that it's high risk to attempt to correct the first surgery. I've decided to live with diminished vision in that eye.
And I will soon have cataract surgery on my remaining (sort of) good eye at the new eye hospital.
At my expense, not through SUS.
As my beloved father who lived to be 95 often said “ It’s tough to get old “. Glad you’re plunging through all the BS and heading forward. Best of luck!
@alan279 Sorry, I seem to be spending a whole lot of time under the rock. Did not know you were back. Anyway 2 things.
1). Obviously, I am glad your back.
2). I have mobility issues that will probably require surgery,
   I am working on my last creative achievement now. I told my daughter
   that I wanted to finish my channel before I went into the hospital.
   It sounds like HealthWise things will be up and down with you too.
   My advice is to complete your Bucket List while you have health.

Got a quote for R$5.000 for my next cataract surgery.
@roddiesho
Riding my trike around the neighborhood and on the beach seems to lessen my descent into physical decrepitude. And I meet so many friendly people on my trike!
Best wishes in your medical travails.
Just out of curiosity, is that for a single vision lens or multi-focal? A guy in Vitoria quoted me R$10,000 for one eye for multi-focal lenses.
@bepmoht
I wan't even asked about lens choices.
@bepmoht
If you can afford it, go to Europe for eye surgery. Lisbon is good, Germany probably better. A friend went to Paris. Perhaps Switzerland?
I am scheduled for JAG laser on my previously botched eye surgery tomorrow. Not a corrective surgery, but it may help. May not.
I've had a cardiogram and a complete hematrocrit this week. Pending proof of life from these tests, I may be able to schedule my second cataract surgery.
If I'm not imprisoned for insult.
Hematocrit results say I'm not quite diabetic. I'm still waiting on the ECG results.
I may be sufficiently alive for my second cataract surgery. To pay for the surgeon's children's college education.
@Alan279 Boa sorte!
I'm looking for adjustable eyeglasses to get through cataract surgery. Adlens sells a product that might work. Can I buy Adlens glasses or something similar in Brazil?
@alan279
I ordered the adjustable focus eyeglasses from AliExpress.
ECG says I have a first degree atrioventricular block. Next step is to meet with an anesthetist.
How many doctors' children do I have to send through college? 😀
@ibdegen
My doctors are counting on me to pay their children's college bills. 😀
I paid the anesthetist R$240 to take my blood pressure and listen to my heart and lungs in preparation fof my second cataract surgery.
I have inflamation and infection in my eye after my capsulotomy a week ago. It's rare, but I have this syndrome. I have serious meds to take for a week. And I see the ophthalmologist again in two days. Another R$300 spent today.
@alan279
P.S. A doctor friend recommends not getting sick in Brazil in June, just as he leaves for two weeks of medical conferences in other countries tomorrow. He will miss Sao João this year.
06/12/25 @alan279. Sorry to hear that!
12 June 2025
@alan279, hope that you recover quickly.
@alan279
The ophthalmologist says I have a slight improvement today. Continue my four meds and see him Tuesday afternoon.
Inflamation in my eye has almost completely dissipated. Discontinue prednisone.
Two more days of cipro to kill the very last bacterium.
Reduced doses of the two eye drops for 7 and 10 days, respectively.
I see the eye surgeon on June 27 to schedule my second cataract surgery.
Whew.
@alan279
Glad to hear things are going well. Cipro will kill every bug. I did a 30 day course. Turns out there's good bacteria that helps lubricate the joints. Cipro did them in and I couldn't even put on or button a shirt without help. It's good that your course is not so long.
Continued good luck.
