I heard I have to pay taxes if I stay longer than 182 days

monarchbeach

Hi my name is Joe from California. I was on a student visa to USP when I was young. The last 2 years I've been working down in Brasil 30 -60 days in a row and then head back to USA, and I do this a few times a year.

Now I'm hoping to stay down there for longer durations. I'm looking into the Digital Nomad Visa.

Also, I heard I have to pay taxes if I stay longer than 182 days (event if all my income is from USA)...is that true.

Thx in advance. :)

Welcome, Joe!  Yes, the magic number is 183:  stay in Brazil 183 days or more in a single calendar year, and you have a legal requirement to file an income tax return with the Receita Federal.

Whether you will have to pay any tax, and how much, are questions to discuss with a Brazilian accountant well before you hit that deadline.  Brazil has a progressive income tax system that taxes lower income less than higher ones, and has policies to limit double taxation, so income already taxed abroad is taxed less heavily than income not taxed anywhere else.
