Buying a car in Papua New Guinea

Kenjee

Hi,

To be able to move in Papua New Guinea, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Papua New Guinea: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

With the law passed in 2018, only cars less than 5 years old can be registered in PNG.  Those that were imported and registered prior to the law taking effect continue to be grandfathered in.  So, your best be is to import a car newer than 5 years old or buy one in country that has been grandfathered in.  Check the Classifieds as we just posted our Jeep Wrangler for sale, which is grandfathered in because we imported it in 2018 just before the new law went into effect.  Email us for info: [link moderated]
