The requirement for residency in Tahiti that stops most people, is that they must show that they can support themselves without working here or being a burden on society, by having adequate funds. Things here are very expensive, much more so than in Europe or USA. I retired here in Papeari, Tahiti after I sold my medical device business in USA. I wish you the best of luck.

Im not retired from teaching yet聽 Yes, i understand I can get a long term visa if I own land but that means I need to leave Tahiti for some period of time and the land I plan on building on is my great grandmother鈥檚 land which I am inheriting, not buying聽

I have been trying to get my French citizenship through my father who was born in Tahiti.聽 Recently the French govt changed the rules and now requires people seeking French nationality to pass a French language exam.聽

I am an American citizen, read and write French pretty fluently and speak with some Spanish bastardization but think I would pass French exam. My husband not so much. We can support ourselves so need to know what we need to do to spend a good amount of time there in year and perhaps traveling on our 50 ft Catamaran out of the country every 6 months or so.

I am not an expert but I think you would need to apply for a visa to extend your stay past 3 months.聽 The French exam is only for those seeking French nationality.聽 To apply for French nationality you need to have a parent born on French soil or be married to a French citizen.聽 My father was born in Tahiti but I don鈥檛 speak French, yet, so until I do, I cannot get French nationality.聽 I can, however, inherit land from my Tahitian/French ancestors and apply for a visa to stay longer than 3 months.聽

my father was born in Papeete, I was born in California.聽 For me to have French citizenship since there is no Tahitian citizenship, I need to apply to the French Consulate in Los Angeles with proof that my father was born in FP, and now recently they require passing a french language test.
