Taking National Insurance Pension Contributions back to Australia

Justin1970

Hello,

I have been living in the UK for the past 17 years and have decided to return home to Australia. Other friends from OZ, NZ and Canada have received a lump sum payment of their NI contributions when they returned home.  Does anyone know how to go about this process and what it might actually be called? I've tried all manner of word combinations on google and the [link under review] website, but with no luck.

Thanks in advance.
Justin

This tool helps you apply for a refund on your National Insurance contributions from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

If you are a UK non resident who pays national insurance you could be eligible to claim a refund of the class 1 national insurance payments deducted from your salary, you are allowed to backdate a claim for the last six UK tax years.

It might be worth leaving it and getting a UK pension when you are older...
