EAD work permit for J-2 Visa

Hello,

My wife will work in Chicago from January on a J-1 visa.
We got married so I'll have a J-2 visa.

I need a work permit EAD.
The request seems to take about 3 months.
and you have to be in America to apply.

Is it possible to go back to France to work until I have the permit in the U.S.?
Are there any special permissions to ask before going ?

Finaly, I have applied for EAD and stayed in US during all the process. It took around 5-6 weeks to have my EAD ready.
I had an appointment for finger print and photo in an USCIS office arround 3 weeks after my application.

I still don't know if we can leave the country during the application process. I have a friend who came back in France but her case was handle by a lawyer so it is a bit different.
