You might want to try moving away from the coast. I lived on the beach in Quintana Roo for 13 years, but we got tired of the heat and the tourists everywhere. Did some research and discovered a small city in Veracruz that is ideal. The tourists are mostly Mexican, the expat population is stable, Xalapa is close by but not intrusive. Living is not as expensive as anywhere on either coast and the weather is great.

Searun, thank you for sharing this info.  I am so sad that this has happened in Puerto Escondido.  I had planned on moving somewhere along the Oaxacan coast this Spring but pushed it out a year due to COVID to give both myself and México more time to safely manage the situation.  So unfortunate that folks took advantage of the situation for their own pleasure and gain.  I was going to use Huatulco as a starting point and go from there.  I'm open to other parts of Mexico though as long as it is warm, affordable and not too high elevation because, well, apparently my feet get swollen in high elevations.  If you are open to the mountainous interior though check out Morelia, Pátzcuaro and surrounding areas.

Anyhow, with your description, I may start looking into other coastal areas.  Though I do need them to be very affordable (I have my residency already) and prefer smaller cities.  I am thrilled to hear this unfortunate PE transformation has not happened in Lo de Marcos, which has also been on my list as an area to explore.  It seems to have some off grid or partially off grid community living that I'm also interested in learning more about.  But then I also get worried that the cost of living in PV would flow over into LDM.  Hmmm... you've given me some things to think about, I'll be following this thread.

Personally for me I am in-between both quiet and out of the way places but like to have access to restaurants, beaches, shopping and modern conveniences while still maintaining my privacy. While I chose Playa del Carmen because it offers security (most secure complex in the area) and is away from crowds and has a nice community of expats, and Mexican nationals who live there for vacation, it is close to private first class hospitals and close to the cancun airport. That being said everyone is different. If you want a sleepy, peaceful community, then look at Merida, Chivas or Campeche. While these areas will never be free of tourists they are quiet and nice and still have some touches of western world. Again everyone has different needs. The town of Sisal is a sleepy beach Pueblo that is nice, peaceful and has great local folks who are genuine.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende (SMA) is way over-built and the water resources are strained. It gets lots of tourist traffic so the main road in town can be bumper to bumper. Cost of living is high especially rents. It does have a lot of luxuries that come with a desirable location.
