Moving from England/UK to Turkiye ☺

Merhaba,

We are planning to move and live in Turkiye from next year. I was wondering if anyone moved their furniture and electrical goods with them. I am a Turkish citizen and my husband is British. I heard that customs might be difficult and expensive. Do we need receipts for everything? It is almost impossible to find them. Any advise would be a great help. Thank you very much. ☺

I think it will be very unprofitable for you to transport your things here, such as furniture and appliances.

There are very high customs duties here and they don't care whether it's used or new, you still have to pay the duty. You don't have to look for receipts, no one will look at them.

If I were you, I would take only the most expensive and valuable things with me.

Finding furniture here is not a problem. Perhaps I brought home appliances, since they are expensive here and even taking into account customs duties, they will be cheaper than buying new ones in a store.

If you are going to Turkey to live, then most likely you will be buying real estate. On the Mediterranean coast, many apartments are sold already furnished "move in and live". Therefore, I would not bother with furniture at all

Unless they are very special and high value items, it is not feasible to import them. You can find local brands at a high quality and a good price.

But if you want to import them, you do not need invoices, you just need to declare some value to them. On import, there will be 20% VAT on the declared value, 2% insurance and about $1K customs brokerage and $3K transport charge.

Hello, I brought some of my electrical goods and I wish I brought them all. Especially the kitchen gadgets and robots. They are so expensive here and the cheap ones (Turkish made) are of bad quality, they break almost instantly.

We did not have to provide any receipt at the customs. The cargo we used and the whole process to have them deliver to our house in Turkiye from England was so easy and cheap. The company we used was fantastic. They  were Turkish and they looked after us very well at every step of the way. They were always in contact with us and communicated to us every detail.

You need a certified transport company to bring over your furniture etc. and has to be inventorised. It's quite expensive and time consuming to do this. All depends on your willingness, time and budget. If you can sell stuff in the UK and buy new stuff in ü쾱, it will be cheaper and no headaches.

I brought my stuff without furniture with a  van and made an inventory myself. At the border they made me unload everything and it took 10 hours delay. It was a horrible experience, but worth it in the end. I made my own inventory and had to pay a fine for a TV which was around £30. The transport had cost me around 2500€ without expenses for the driver (hotel and fuel).

I will also be moving the early part of 2026 but from the US.  As a matter of convenience, I have been bringing my treasured books, T-shirts, record collection and a some of my clothes in my checked in luggage when I visit.  Lufthansa allows 2 checked-in bags per person.  As others have mentioned, it is hassle-free and cheaper to buy furniture and household appliances when you arrive rather than having them shipped.  Besides, you can tailor your purchases to the design and layout of your new residence.  On my departure flight to ü쾱 when I move, I will be bringing my desktop computer and laptops.  Be mindful that if you bring a cellphone when you move, you will have to have it registered prior to 4 months elapsing for a fee of 45,614 TL which is £814.  So, I will be purchasing a new phone when I arrive.
