Professional Attire for Ladies

curlyq

I am going to teach at PNU. As I understand I must wear an abaya in public, but need an idea of work attire.

Can any of the ladies give me an idea of what you wear on a typical week at school? I know long black skirts are the staple, but what about tops? Long sleeve t-shirts with cardigans, button down cotton dress shirts?

Are long dresses okay?

Thanks.

you dont have to wear an abaya if youre a dude!

Um, yeah borntobemild...that is indeed true. But it has nothing to do with my question.

Please don't waste my time with nonsense.

Thanks.

I believe you are not required to wear abaya inside the school!

In the ladies only work environment, you can wear everything you mentioned, you don't have to wear Abaya; no one does. Even ladies do wear knee covering skirts.

I'm a female teacher out here.  It all depends upon the school where you teach.  Generally speaking, long dresses or skirts are the norm.  Ankle length is preferable, but at least mid-calf (no more than 4 inches above the ankle).  Long sleeve shirts, or at least shirts that are down to the elbow or three-quarter sleeves are usually also acceptable.  V-neck shirts are ok as long as no cleavage is shown (if you're busty, avoid v-necks and stick to blouses).  Sleeveless shirts, and short-cap sleeves are not acceptable.  Depending upon the school, pants are allowed, but generally speaking, tops worn with pants must be long enough to cover the butt, hips and crotch - so they should be mid-thigh (think tunic style).  I have seen some teachers at my school wear blazers that cover the hips, but personally, blazers are too hot for the weather.  Oh, and bring some warm clothes - it does get chilly during the winter (10-15 degrees centrigrade).  You won't have to wear an abaya while teaching, and you won't have to cover your hair since gender segregation is in full force out here. Check with the school where you're going to teach - some places don't allow pants.  Hope that helps.

Also, it's hard to find natural fabrics out here - so stock up on cotton and linen.  All the abayas are made out of polyester - so you swelter and stink.  If you can, try to get an abaya made out of cotton or linen.  You won't be able to find that out here unless you're willing to pay through your nose for a designer silk abaya.
