Dress Code!

KPalmer

Hi Guys!

I have been told very differing opinions about the dress code around Oman.

Am I right in thinking I should cover my shoulders and to my knees? Also what rules apply when on the beaches or in hotels etc?

The information I have found often contradicts other things I have read!

Thanks
Kathryn!

Hello Kathryn,

I wish you a safe arrival to Oman. It's a beautiful country with lovely people.

Oman is generally very tolerant. There are no real rules on dress code, but you want to respect the local culture and not attract undue attention. It's a general role to be modest and dress decently. I advise covering the shoulders to knees in local marketplaces (souqs) and roadside shops. However when you are going to malls and contemporary shopping centers you don't have to cover that much.

If you're at one of the international hotels, you can literally wear what you want. However If you're at an public beach, the decision should be based on whether or not there are locals around. If there are locals present (especially men) I would advise against stripping off and getting in the sea. Not because it's illegal but because you would probably feel very uncomfortable as you'll attract a lot of unwanted attention.

Anyway feel free to ask what you want and I hope you have a nice experience in Oman.

Best regards

KPalmer

Hi Mark,

That has been really helpful thank you so much for your reply! It will be really useful when packing and deciding on outfits to go out and explore when I first get there!!
