but living there is too expensive
so you can live in a suburb and work in beirut

If you work near to Beirut or one of the coastal areas, it's better to live further out, up a mountain, and commute, if you drive.  I was lucky enough to live and work in Brumanna, which is lovely town and just a 10 minute drive down to the coast, and half an hour to Beirut.  I also lived near Jounieh, but 15 mins up the mountain, in Adma. 

Having a car is pretty essential as public transport is not great and walking any distance is uncomfortable, difficult and dangerous as pavements only really exist in towns, (and not always then) and drivers are not considerate when people are walking on the edge of the road!  For women, walking alone can often be a problem as people will think you are a prostitute. Get a car. Commute and live in a smaller community.

As for 2017, Lebanon still doesn't have a balance between its cities, you can't actually find a city where everything is found in! for example, if you want to live in a cheap city like Zahle, its not going to be an interesting life since this town itself doesn't have actually the look of a city (mostly located on a mountain) which makes transportation a hard approach usually. plus the factor of the low end investments, so work opportunities is poor.

While moving the balance a little bit higher here comes Beirut, where expensive life starts. Its nearly impossible for a man these days to save a penny there unless you consider the suburbs, but you earn some excitement and jobs in return. though not that great but still pays off for a third-world country like Lebanon which has been in wars for decades.

If you were looking for nightlife, then definitely Beirut suits a little, where every other city fails.
