How do I filter current discussions?

Hi, newbie question and apologies if I'm being particularly dof but - is there a way of sorting the forums to show current discussions?聽 I went to respond to a topic and the system mentioned there hadn't been any comments for over a year and suggested I start a new thread.

Thanks John, I meant more was there a way to re-sort the forum topics so that active ones appear at the top. Right now I am seeing forums that have been inactive for ages ahead of ones that have recent comments, it is a completely random selection. Not sure how to change my settings, or even if I can.
