Selling Land Rover Defender 110 TDI - UK registered, now in Algarve

LM011

Hello everyone,

As mentioned in the title, I have a very well-maintained Defender 110 TDI, 2003, which unfortunately I am not able to register in Portugal. Long story short, I used to be resident in the UK and came over to the Algarve in 2023. I really wanted this car and brought it with me; however, little did I know that you only have one year to register it in Portugal after becoming resident here.

When I went for the MOT, it became obvious there was a mistake on the V5: the car showed 5 seats, but in reality it only had 2. I had to go back to DVLA and get a new V5, which took ages. By the time they corrected it, I had already been in Portugal for over a year, so I could no longer register the car without paying silly money.

When you become resident in Portugal, you have the right to bring one car, but you need to be relatively quick and register it within 6 months or one year (different people tell you different things).

So now the car is garaged, and the only alternative would be to drive it back to the UK. Before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in buying it here. We could do the sale in the UK, and if you are in your first few months in Portugal it will be relatively easy to register it. There are companies who can help, charging about 1,000 to 1,500 euros all in.

As mentioned, the car has been really well looked after. It is very sound mechanically, and it has Stage 1 tuning, so it’s more powerful than the factory setting, but not intrusive. Land Rover fans know what this is, but if you need some insight, it’s simply a way to make these cars more drivable, CPU changes only, no mechanical alterations.

Basically, I’d really like to know the car is in good hands, someone who will look after it. This car can have a very long life in this weather, so taking it back to England really feels like the worst option.

We are based near Loulé, so anyone interested, please let me know. I can send you photos, it seems the forum does not allow attachments, or maybe I am just not looking where I should be looking. in any case, I can send photos and any other info.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

In case you didn't know a UK reg vehicle is only legal in EU for approx 180 days per 360 days.  Generally a Portuguese resident is not permitted to drive a UK reg car in Portugal. UK reg vehicle needs current UK MOT to be legally on road in Portugal.

Others have been caught out by having a UK vehicle overstay in Portugal and then there's few legal options left but have it scrapped here or trailered out of the EU - hopefully you are not in this situation.

I think you are referring to something else, I know all that. Basically, when you move from the UK to Portugal you have the right to bring your car (one vehicle only) to register it without paying taxes and this is what I did. However, you only have 1 year to register it and in my case it took over one year because I did not start the process straightaway, basically I became resident and by the time I brought the car I was already 6 months in the residency and when I did bring it over and started the process it become obvious I needed to change the V5. Changing the V5 took a very long time, so by the time I've got it back it was over 1 year since the day I became resident and I could not complete the registration. Now, what I was saying was this: if anyone has just become resident we could exchange the name on the V5 (UK sale) and this person could say they have just came with the car and they want to register it. That would be OK. Anyway, thanks very much for your advice about putting it on a trailer.

Ok,        The "one tax free personal vehicle import" needs to have been owned by personal importer for a period of time (6 months?) in their previous country beforehand.

If you search online forum further you'll find there are others who have had similar issues with non PT vehicles and their PT residency.
