Relocation to Portugal

Siddharth Sahay

Hello I am currently residing in Kuwait with my wife and 2 kids but plan to relocate to Portugal under a suitable visa/residency scheme or via work permit (both avenues are being explored currently) I want to know the Dos and Donts of moving to Portugal - what are the daily life challenges? what is the job market like for a Compliance professional? How much income should I have every month to live comfortably? What benefits do I get besides education and healthcare (although they are the most needed)? How expensive is housing, groceries and utilities? These are just some of the initial questions.... Appreciate your viewpoints to the above. I can be reached over phone (whatsapp) on *** or email at ***. Looking forward to your insights. Warm regards Siddharth

Hi and Welcome.

You need to find out the requirements for each visa you are looking for. Some of the questions you ask will be answered if you know the requirements. All this information can easily be found on the internet. There are pros and cons everywhere. As for prices, what's expensive for one person isn't expensive for another. Everything is relative and it depends on the way of living. As for housing, it depends on where you live, there are areas of the country that are more expensive and others that are cheaper.

You can do a search on this site

Hello,

As you say, the first step is to essentially assess your budget and whether Portugal is the right option for you and your family. Only you can know this of course :)

I have only lived in the Algarve so can only really comment for this region, but to try give you some idea as to typical costs; Rent for a three bed property will likely set you back n the region of 1,500-2,000 EUR per month for modern close to beach or 800-1500 for further inland. Utilities will vary by season and your families typical activity (i.e. working from home, water usage etc), but expect around 60-80EUR for electricity, 25-40 EUR for water, and 30 EUR per month for bottled gas, 50EUR for wifi and tv. I pay an additional 600EUR per year for health insurance for both of us (just our preference to have, but have used the national healthcare and they were very good). We have a pool and garden and the maintenance fees for these are in the region of 200-250pm.

For our basic groceries and household item for our two person household, we spend around 120EUR per week.

The Job market is tough as well paid jobs are very competitive and so you should really research whether you can get work in your profession by a Portuguese business (if you speak the language), or whether you can get remote work. If looking for remote work, you may need to check that the employer is happy for you to reside in Portugal as they do have additional fees to pay.

Not sure how old your kids are, but the private school fees here in the Algarve are quite pricey. So you would of course want to look at this. If deciding to go for state school, you may need to pay a private tutor for your kids to learn the language for better integration.

Again, it reeeeeaally depends on the area you are looking to move to, how you and your family live (the food you enjoy, the usage of the home, the type of home etc). Perhaps when you narrow down an area, and a house type (apartment or villa etc) then people can give you a better idea as to utilities (I'm sure the current occupants could give you a ballpark figure too).

Hope it's been helpful or of some use! :)

Hi and Welcome,

As JPT posted above,

The things you ask  housing, utilities etc  are all related to your own choices which others cannot really guess at. One person may normally live in a large villa with heated/cooled swimming pool overlooking a beach whereas another may normally live in a one roomed apartment in a inner city tower block and their monthly outgoings differ vastly.   Your initial issue will be trying to decide which area you may want to live and then the property prices/rentals there,  there is a general lack of rental property.  It would be a very good idea for you be here and spend time in different areas to decide which area you and your family may want to live, property prices/rent, jobs, schools, transport, shops, hospitals, weather differ in different places and all these are a matter of your personal choice.  When here  you will also be able to do some of the basics like getting tax code (NIF) and bank account (needed for rental/buying) and physically looking at property, you may be surprised by the quality, lack of insulation, lack of central heating, lack of air conditioning, slowness of internet, lack of phone signals, and the need to do stuff in Portuguese (or you may not be surprised by any of it).
