Importing a car

kinggra68

Hi

I would appreciate if anyone on here has had experience of importing a car into Portugal from Canada. I found a previous importation of some boxes of personal items such as linens, household wares and photos etc to be a very complicated and expensive process despite having all the relevant documentation from the Portuguese Embassy submitted. I was charged a lot considering these were all previously owned and used by our family. We are Irish citizens but have dual citizenship in Canada and am possibly interested in importing my car. Any advice would be great, thank you  Grainne

First check if you are eligible for "tax" exemption on the one vehicle new resident scheme. If not then work out the vast amount of tax you'll pay on a vehicle import, this obviously does not include other fees you'll pay.  If you search on the forum these questions have been answered previously.

Here's some help ( PT Gov website):

There is a lot of information on the net, google it ‘Importation of motor vehicles into Portugal’

If you have no emotional attachment to this car, I think it's best to sell it and buy a new or second-hand one in Portugal. It's less trouble for you.

Greetings!

Has anyone successfully imported a right hand drive car to Portugal?  For driving in PT our car is fitted with headlamp deflector stickers. Are these stickers acceptable for the Type B Inspection? From internet search it 'feels' like they might be but it's not terribly clear. Obviously it would be useful to know before the inspection so that we can prepare.

Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks.

@northernlites,

Before "Type B Inspection" you have the  "Homologation" step.

General Requirements for Importing an RHD Car to Portugal:

Certificate of Conformity (CoC): This is crucial. It certifies that your vehicle meets EU safety and environmental standards. If you don't have one, you'll need to obtain it from the car manufacturer or a specialist.

Type B Inspection: This is a mandatory and thorough inspection at an authorized technical inspection center. It checks the car's compliance with Portuguese regulations.

If you have questions about headlamp deflector stickers on your car, you can check it at any inspection centre:

No, stickers aren't permitted for imported vehicles, the lamps have to be changed.

Not personally, but I know quite a few Brits who have imported cars to the EU. They are fine for tourists.
