If you're an EU citizen, why use these online services?

You can ask for it free of charge at a tax office in Portugal.

There are people here in this forum who have used that paid service you mentioned and have been satisfied.

But remember, you have to give them a power of attorney online, so they become your tax representatives in Portugal.

You'll then have to disassociate yourself from this representative once you have your NIF tax number and password.

Hi. For me, [link moderated]/ was so easy. I had my NIF # within weeks.

@JohnnyPT

As I'm currently in Portugal on my UK passport but will use my Irish passport (that's at home) I also want to set up my bank account while I'm here for ease.

Do you know if it's hard dissociating yourself?

Thanks again!

If you are not resident in Portugal, all you need is an identity document or passport and a tax representative (individual or collective) who is resident in Portugal.

A tax representative can be any person residing in Portugal, national or foreign. Don't know anyone here? It doesn't have to be a solicitor, but if you need to find one near you, here's some support:

Solicitors / "solicitadores":

A solicitor can also help you open a bank account, although the bank clerks all speak English and are usually very helpful.

If you want, you can also use this service online, although I think this is more useful for people who aren't in Portugal. It's up to you.

@JohnnyPT

Yeah but it's more faff to do it with a UK passport than an EU isn't it?

JohnnyPT

No. For NIF it's the same thing. You can use your UK passport.

JohnnyPT

The difference is that as an EU citizen you don't need a tax representative.

Okay I think I have someone I could use - will go to the tax office this week & see if my friend is available/has to come with me.

Only thing is I only have a digital proof of address but I'm sure that's no problem as it's a certified digital copy from my English bank.

@egchelsea

Does your friend (fiscal representative) need to come to the tax office with you, or do you just need his/her NIF number and address?  @JohnnyPT do you know?

JohnnyPT

Your tax representative should be present with you at the AT tax office.

If he/she is not present, you need to have his/her power of attorney. The tax office is very strict with powers of attorney. The words have to be written the way they want, otherwise the power of attorney will be rejected.

Thank you @JohnnyPT!
