You should enquire about the tests at a driving school. I don't know when the tests should be taken. Whether before or after the IMT appointment.

I talked to a Russian friend lately and he said that it only took less than 2 weeks to exchange his driver's license into a Portuguese one. He drove to the IMT office in Viseu to get this done. Good to know, I think.

(1) Over 60 - Understood if under 60, Portugal now recognizes OECD driver licenses, so no longer need to exchange. What about if over 60?  Would the old exchange method still be required?

(2) New License - Could I pretend I do not have an overseas license and just take the local driver exam anew? That would allow me to keep my overseas license, as well as gain a Portugal driver license, right?

(3) Penalty - As I am over 60, if I am caught using my overseas license, any idea what the fine/penalty would be?

Of course there could be something I going on I don't know about, but sure, you go to IMT's site, follow the instructions, that's the method.

I don't know any reason why they would refuse to license you after completing the course and taking the test, and you would naturally be a lot of good information out of it, but it's a lot, just to save your foreign card.  Just tell your foreign motor vehicles office that you lost your card and need a replacement, and you'll have one to give away and one to keep.

Yes, you can. I did recently. However, the foreign one had expired adn my home country wouldn't issue another, given I'm no longer a resident. However, I was also given a document to say I'm authorised to drive; aonly inm y home country and portugal.

Your old country of residence won't give you one if you're no longer a reisdent - I know this, through recent experience (yesterday).

Those form OECD can stay on their home licence until expiry/renewal or ?? 1 or 2 ?? years if resident. Over 60, you have to have a more stringent medical when exchanging lic's, but you can exchange upto 6 months before age 60, which is less stingent. My GP didn't say that - so 2 medicals had to be done in the end- suprise.

While we're here ... I got my license card this summer, and was kind of surprised to realize that it expires this winter, thus good for only about 1/2 year.  That's because I turn 70 (egads.)  I don't expect any notification from IMT about this, you just have to keep up with matters on your own.
