Tips on finding a rental apartment in Eindhoven

Purni

Hello,

I am moving to the Netherlands in October this year with my husband and 13 year old son due to an employer sponsored relocation.

Based on what little research we have done so far, we are thinking of looking for accommodation in Eindhoven due to it's being a kind of tech hub, and my husband can look for a job there. And also the fact that it has an International school.

However, I am aware that it is very difficult to find rental accommodation and so I am wondering if someone on this forum would please share some tips with me.

I have been suggested to first book into a service apartment for a couple of months so that I can use their address for registering for BSN, until I can find an apartment to rent.

But really the service apartments are very expensive so I am looking for some other alternative.

How can I get my BSN, residence permit and my son's school admission done and not have my bank account emptied until we find a rental place.

Many thanks in advance for any and all advice!

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

Rental accommodation is always in short supply in the Netherlands, and the adage that where there are market shortages, the value of the product will always increase applies here. As a result, and as you have discovered, it is expensive.آ  It doesn't help that all social housing is now reserved for asylum seekers and their families.آ  The Dutch Government has issued a webpage that covers the subject; this will take you straight to it.آ  How to find somewhere - my advice would be to use an AirBnb or similar for the first couple of months until you can find somewhere suitable.آ  Google will help you find somewhere, but be careful of scammers - if something is to good to be true, then it probably isآ  a scammer

To get your BSN, you will need to live at an address that permits registration, and not all do; for example, you will need the written permission of the landlord to register at the address, so always ask before you sign anything.آ  Holland isn't that big a country, and you could always commute to Eindhoven from a house in a border town in Germany or Belgium.

While I understand that your son's age and lack of the Dutch language make International schools attractive, they are very expensive; perhaps you should consider sending your son to a local school (they are free), you'll be surprised at how quickly kids pick up the language and integrate with their new friends.

I hope this helps.

Thank you Cynic for your response.

We did think of AirBnB but then we read that AirBnB address cannot be used for the BSN. And since we will need a BSN for almost everything (that is what I read), we need to find something that we can afford plus will also let us register for BSN. And was told that some service apartments let you register with their address, but then they are expensive. So we are trying to find alternatives.
