VCR Players.

jessebernie

Hola from Panama. As we prepare to ship our stuff to Malta, could someone please tell us if DVD/VCR combo players are still available in Malta?
None of our electrical stuff will work so we have to buy new and have a load of VCR Tapes.
Need to know before next Tuesday when the packers arrive.
Thanks, Mike and Dee.

Yes - you can also buy them from amazon uk for delivery to Malta

...another option is to get a power converter, I have a couple that I use to power my US DVD player, printer etc (anything that has a US plug and requires 110V - anything that has a universal power adapter 110V-240V, like a laptop, just needs a UK plug adapter)...but overall it's a lot easier to buy new from here or the UK.

Hi Dee,

Look forward to seeing you here soon. I have a 110V US adapter somewhere but you are probably better off getting a new player  here or from the UK (or EU)

Tell us when you are arriving !

Don't even think about it (if you have to many). The shipping cost will be more expensive then:

CONVERT VHS TO DVD

"The simplest solution would be to connect the output of the VHS recorder to the input of a set-top DVD recorder".

So buy a DVD recorder, do your stuff and then resell it for a cheaper price.

or google: CONVERT VHS TO DVD, CONVERT VHS TO DivX to get more ideas.

As hammersfan said, check the back of all your electronics for variable voltage (all mine are 100-240), and sometimes, easier than buying a plug converter, you can get a power bar that will accept North American (Panama is on the same system correct?) and European plugs, we use them all the time here in Mongolia, they don't change the voltage but they at least accept multiple shaped plugs.

The biggest problem (with DVDs but not your VHS or VHS converted to DVD) might be what region code they have.  If you have movies purchased in Panama they will be region 4 or region 0, but DVD players purchased in the EU can only play Region 2 (and Region 0, which is world wide).  If you are bringing DVDs (especially new ones) you should check it out.  More info

Please feel free to corret me if I am wrong...:D

DVD players purchased in the EU can only play Region 2

You can buy multi region dvd players in the EU, and even those which only play region 2 can often be altered to be multi region by inputting a code.

hammersfan

Is that legal George? ;-)

georgeingozo

On the basis that amazon uk sell multi region players I presume yes, although inputting a code could theoretically void any warranty. However, in Malta shops selling dvd players typically input the code without even asking you

Hi all, thank you for all the great information.  The VCR stays with house as we sold all the electronics with the house.  Two weeks to go and we'll be in Malta.  Major stress at the moment doing all the final paperwork and stuff...so not much time to write!  See you all soon!
