Malta and Gozo Diving is Very good, Malta was voted the number one Destination for Diving in the Med with it also being classed as number 3 in the world.  This in my opinion is due to the Diversity of dives from nice Shallow reef and wreck dives, to Cavern and Cave Dives then to Deep Wrecks.

At the moment the water temp is around 22 degrees and you can easily wear a 3mm / 5mm full suit.

There are some great schools here and the diving is not that expensive depending upon where you are on the Island.  I work at the weekends as a Freelance insructor and can certainly give you some indications of the Good and great dive schools.

I'd say Gozo is best but then I am totally biased as I am a freelance diving instructor living on Gozo ;-)

Love the Diving in Gozo, have some great dives there Inland Sea, Azure Window, Billinghurst, The Wrecks, could easily spend a week or more just diving in Gozo.

I do think that the diving in gozo is not a spoilt as Malta but then again Malta has more dives, just been a bad start to the Season with all the Wind we had.

I think wherever you dive here you will be happy. Wonderful places - a lot of shore and shallow dives.

I moved to Malta 2 moths ago and met scubaboy and since then he spoils me showing only wonderful wrecks on both Malta and Gozo. Each time we dive on other wreck and still there are lot of other dive sites to explore. I think that even two weeks of diving each day wont let you explore all cool places here. And everything is close, because the island itself is small. Just pick some good diving center and you will be overwhelmed.

I would like to purchase goggles,
snorkel and flippers for recreational purpose. Any suggestions where to buy and what would be considered as a reasonable price.

I'm in no way an expert and I'm sure the others who dive properly can give you other guidelines and best brands etc.

If you want a simple set to just do the odd hours snorkelling here and there then you can get a decent set for around 25-30 euros

Just make sure the mask is tempered safety glass and the surround is silicone (as this makes a better seal than say rubber and doesn't rot as readily).

The fins are fine and comfortable but i tended not to use them so much as I stood up regularly to clear the glass (don't forget to spit )You can then get a perfectly good snorkel and mask set for around 18 euros.

I bought a set like this when I was over a couple of weeks ago and used it for my whole holiday (a lot).

The creatures and fish were amazing (don't pick up any orange and white worms they have very nasty urticating hairs but look fabulous) and i found a baby octopus who over a day excavated a nest like a cave and hid under some collected seaweed!

I would also get a tube with a proper valve to clear any water if you dive down for a closer look (just blow and your good to go)

I bought mine in a lovely little shop on the waterfront in Bugibba and the family there were really helpful but I saw the same sets all over Malta in most seaside shopping areas.

depends on also what you want to use them for, snorkelling sets are quite abundant and Beuchat do some really nice sets.  If you are giong to get into Scuba diving then go directly to a Scuba shop or School otherwise you will be buying a snorkelling kit that would not really be any use for Scuba.

Piece of advice:
Once you buy a mask clear the glass from inside so it does not fog so easly. You can do it with a toothpaste mixed with coca-cola (worked for me) - I left such a mixture for a night and then washed it the morning.
