Your husband comes in on a normal visa.

You get your residency card sorted out when you arrive, and then apply for a residency permit for your husband. Its no big deal :-)

yes, a Schengen visa for your husband should settle the problem. I'm not sure about the requirements for the journey to Gozo ?

You should also be aware of the fact that the UK is not part of the Schengen area!

Thanks Ricky. Yes I know if we visit the uk I'll have to get a different visa for him. Will just have to turn him into a brit eventually haha . I have spoke to a friend of my mother's (she lives in Gozo) and she has said we can probably get a years shengan  from the italian embassy in Johannesburg which will give plenty of time to sort residency for him. I cant believe we are finally getting out of Africa - this is so exciting!!

residency should take a month - they should fast track it as your husband is non-EU

Are you talking about the long-term national visa issued by the embassy of the country you are travelling too ? Does Italy process national visas for Malta in SA?

actually that doesn't prove it, as it shows the SA embassy servicing Malta is in Rome, but I can't find a Maltese Embassy is SA, so I presume its the case

yes as far as i'm aware there is no Maltese embassy so one goes through the Italian one instead.

Hi, There is NO Maltese Embassy in SA. I got my Shengen visa for Malta in April from the Italian Embassy in Pretoria - only for 6 months but free, as my husband is also EU. A friend told me yesterday that the Italian Embassy in Pretoria no longer processes Shengen visas but you'll have to check that out. Good luck!

Hi Biddy, oh wouldn't that be typical that it stops when I need it haha. I guess if they have, I'll just go to the next nearest embassy - Spanish or Greek. Will find out when I get home and let you know.

An EU citizen has the right to go to any other EU countries embassy and expect help, but only if their country doesn't have an embassy there.

To get a Shengen visa to most EU countries you must provide them with proof of your travel plans ie. proof of booked accommodation for the entire length of your stay. Then you get a visa for that length of time. Because of the recession all embassies are tightening up on non-EU visitors!!! I doubt that you'd be able to get a visa from the embassy of your choice. The Italian embassy deals with applications to enter Malta, but they, like the British, may be using an agency.

well i had my schengen visa from other embassy and not Malta embassy in Libya! and it's for one year i can go to any EU countries mult ,,, i understand that the schengen is same from any embassy is that true?
or you mean it should be issued from the Maltese embassy ???

the official wording is :

'Schengen visa applications must be filed at the diplomatic mission of the country which is the main destination of the visit.  In the event, therefore, that an applicant intends to visit several Schengen states (with stays of approximately the same duration), the application must be filed at the diplomatic mission of the country of first entry.   Thus, applicants wishing to visit Malta as the main destination, or the country of first entry into the Schengen area, must file   their applications at MaltaÂ’s diplomatic missions or its representations'

But I'm not aware of any consequences if you change your plans.

Schengen visa Type A and C should be the same. Other visa types are national (long stay) visa which also allow transit for up to 5 days through another Schengen country.
