I simply engaged an accountant to get through the first few years. You are obliged to file taxes on paper the first year. After that, you set up your account on Finances Publiques and file digitally. Be careful however as even among accountants and notaires there is a lot of incorrect information on what foreign residents pay. My accountant is specialized in this area. It was expensive, but worth it.

I am thinking of moving/retiring to Lille, France but not until next year ... which will arrive sooner than I would like ... all time seems to be accelerating. I am not really needing employment and can support myself but I think it is important to have better French speaking skills. Any advice anyone has would be most appreciated .... also stories of how much you love it there ... to help encourage me to proceed with plans to move.

@Julien Hi Julien, I´m new to the forum and wrote an introduction of myself.  Prior to clicking on "submit," I deleted "@Julien" thinking that the post would go to the whole group.  Unfortunately, it disappeared.  Any idea where it might have gone?  I will repost later, if you cannot find it.  Many thanks....Di

Bhavna

@Julien I found my introduction!

Bonjour! So happy to have found this website and forum. Looking forward to meeting new friends, and offering help whenever I can.

My husband (French citizen) and I (US citizen) are both retired from jobs in the US. We thought it would be great to move to France to be closer to his family, for the weather, culture, arts, etc. I Googled "best place to live in France" and the city of Montpellier came out at the top of the list. So, we flew there to look for an apartment to rent until we could find which area in which we want to settle.

However, we ran into some major roadblocks. 1) There is a shortage of available rentals, 2) there is a "convention" that real estate agencies follow, which make it practically impossible to rent an apartment, unless it is from a private owner. If anyone is interested, I am happy to explain more about the convention.

So, the saga continues. We have one more week in an Airbnb to get this figured out.  If anyone has suggestions or can help, that would be very much appreciated.  Merci!

Peace....Di

Hi Emma

I have just joined the Forum. From your post in Jan 2022, you will have been in France almost a year, hope you are settled and enjoying it.  Provence is very nice. I am French originally but I have been living in Australia and NZ for the last 35 years.  Now as we are retiring, we want to spend more time in France, in the south of France.  Take care

Hi, We moved to Brest back in July 2021 (after two years in the UK) and have loved getting to know France. We've decided to settle here for good. Absolutely love the people and the quality of life here. We're sailors, so we now have a sailboat down at the marina. Very much a dream come true. I'm here on a work visa, but plan to retire soon. My daughter goes to the French university in Brest and has done a great job of both mastering French and doing her studies.

We are trying to renovate a house we purchased in Le Conquet and are running into many challenges, but that is part of living here I think. We have to leave our American expectations behind us.

We have a lot of adventures ahead of us here in France and in Europe in general. Looking forward to my retirement years and seeing it all.

cheers,

Ken

La Sage

@earld I'm quite new to the French forum; but I have been an expat for nearly 30 years-working and living abroad. Now my retired husband and I are thinking of long term renting or purchasing a home in France. While not wishing to live in a large city, we're going to look at different regions. This will be a different experience as employers took care of all the paperwork/rental/utilities etc., previously.

Since your post in Feb, how have things gone for you?

Hope things are going well.

Cheers!

S Hopkins

@Julien Bon Jour!

My husband and I retired recently from nearly 30 years of expat work and life. But the itch refuses to retire. We're considering returning to France where we have never lived but visited several times. We would like to live "near" a large city, just rent or buy in a smaller nearby town. Our first foray will be next year and focus mainly on the regions of France in the South-not on the beach towns though.

We enjoy hiking, winter sports, not afraid of some snow-just not the amount you need a snowblower for. We have a French dog, my husband enjoys bicycling and birding. I enjoy long walks with the dog and photographing birds and nature in general. I have both a British passport and an American one; hubs has US. We're hoping to find a locale where there are some English speaking expats in residence, but not as an isolated community. I speak some French but Fluency is still a goal. We had two stints in South America (Argentina & Peru) so our Spanish would help if we moved near that border. We may consider locations farther north for trips to the UK or just to be closer to a major airport. That said, given the French rail system, when not on strike, that consideration is not a high priority.

All suggestions or admonitions for locales will be considered,

Cheers!

Hi,

I live in both France and the US, but this year is the first year that I have lived in France more than the US. I came back to France in July and thought it's time to try and meet people in France other than my husband's friends. We live in Six Fours/ Sanary, so it seems quite difficult to meet expats in such a small town. Hoping there may be a group or individuals around here and Toulon.

Thank you,

Christie
