Raising bilingual kids (English and another language)

Ameerah Arjanee

Hello, I am a content writer for Íæż½ã½ã Magazine. We are planning on writing an article on the advantages and challenges of raising bilingual (or even trilingual!) children while living abroad as an expat. Parents of the forum, what have been your experiences with teaching your kids multiple languages or having them grow in multilingual environments abroad? Thank you for sharing your testimonies that we can include in the article.

Communication skills are essential, it's all part of integrating with your new neighbours.  Speaking the local language is a key, desirable skill when looking for work in other countries.

Like their mother, our kids are all trilingual (Dutch, German and English).  There's nothing unusual in that in their native Holland, we lived in all these countries, my wife was born and raised in a Dutch/German border town, she learnt English/German at school and because a lot of the of TV content back then was in English and German, so speaking and listening to all these different languages was normal in our house.
