How to report UK pension on US tax form?

agatarogata12

Hi. I'd appreciate any help.

When filling US taxes, which forms should I be using to include employer's contributions to my standard UK government pension plan (NEST)? No FBAR or foreign account income needed as it's below 10,000.

Should I report it:

  • on 1040? In line 5a?
  • on the FTC (form 1116) to exclude the tax? What would help me to offset the tax, my salary contributions to the pension plan?
  • on form 8833 to claim the UK/US treaty? How though?
  • on form 3520 for foreign trust? Although I heard there are problems with those...
  • On form 8621? Will it count as a PFIC?

I'll appreciate any insights. I'm very confused and panicked about the topic.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

I'm not a tax specialist, but from elsewhere on the Internet I have learned that UK State pensions do not have to be reported; private pensions do, read more at this .

My advice is always, if you have complicated tax affairs, always consult a qualified specialist.

I hope this helps.

@Cynic hi, thank you lots for your comment!

In my understanding, UK State Pension are the payments from government after reaching certain age. It is separate from the pension plan, so I don't think it cannot be reported.

Hi again

The link I gave you seems to suggest otherwise, hence my advice to speak to a qualified specialist (their charges are normally deductible).
