Mistakes expats make in Austria

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Did you make any mistakes when you first moved to Austria? What were they?

How did you address your mistakes? Did you learn anything from them?

With hindsight, what would you do differently?

Are there any tips you could give future expats in Austria to help them avoid these kinds of mistakes?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Priscilla

When moving to a new country it really is recommended that you do some research beforehand, most people do but as I moved to Austria for love, I was a bit lazy in researching there.

A lot of places don't take debit or credit cards, so make sure you have a pocketful of cash.

If you are used to 24H shops forget it in Austria, there are none. Shops are closed on a *Sundays and public holidays, so make sure you know what times the shops are open in your area and when the holidays are if you are low on food in the cupboards. Of course, petrol stations have small shops attached to them that sell some basics, but that comes with a price.

*If you live in a major city that has an airport and main train hubs, you will find a regular supermarket open till 10pm on holidays and Sundays.
