Cost to live there

jimstraw

Sorry, first post and this has probably been asked and answered to death but, how well if at all can a retired couple in their 60's live in P.R. on $3000.00 a month, and would it be a safe area near anything?

Hi, my name is Scott and I have been living here for about 3 years now. I lived in the Tampa Bay area of Florida for 20 years prior and the cost of living here is about the same across the board. The exceptions would be health insurance and vegetables. I am 61 and in Florida I was paying almost $900 per month for health insurance but here it is just $330 and includes dental. The problem is finding the right doctor and expect to wait 3 to 5 months for a specialist. Also, like many other things here, the hours of operation for doctors etc. seem to be merely a guideline or maybe even a best case scenario wish. Fruits and veggies are more expensive but other groceries are about the same. 1/2 gal milk: $3.08.

Another financial benefit is homeowners insurance. As long as no more than 30% of the home is made of something other than concrete, ie, wood, steel etc, insurance is about $700 per year for a $150,000 home and is not mandatory  plus there is no real estate tax for a resident’s first home.

I live in the North-West corner of the island in the Isabela/Quebradillas area and home prices are similar to Florida as well.

So, all in all, if you could live comfortably in Florida on $3K/month then you should have no problem doing the same in Puerto Rico.

I have a home in Aguada on the West and my living expenses are around $1200-$1500/mo. but am a widow not given to much extravagance.  If you home is paid for and concrete then home owners is low, no property tax on main home.  Water depends on where you live, we had community well at $12 month but didn't like the undependable supply to dug a well.  I have a septic so don't know sewer rates would be.  Electricity is a wild card.  Mine was running under $150 month until they just put in a transformer that actually works so my bill went way up.  Phone with internet and TV tends to be $100-$150.   I paid cash for my cars and have normally just had the tag/liability insurance which is about $160/yr. but this year bought a new car so my car insurance was $600/yr.
Maintenance may run you a bit more due to the tropics and ocean that are hard on homes.  Furniture and clothes wear out faster.
We'd love to have you!  Blessings.

Yes you can as long you don't acquire any more large debts, beside mortgage; like extra car payment, personal loans, very high credit cards balances etc.

Humidity in Puerto Rico varies depending on location it can range from 30% - 80% year around with a good Air-conditioning unit is a must since weather ranges from mid 70F to high 90F year around. If you are considering on locating to Puerto Rico, let me what type of property you are looking for and what budget you have in mind. FYI Disable Military Veterans are 100% exempt from paying Property Taxes.
