Medical plans in PR.

ReyP

You may want to check this web site that list all sorts of medicals plans available in the island.

2 pieces of advice:
1) Make sure that the doctors and hospitals covered are convenient to you, some may be rather limiting.
2) If you plan to visit the mainland from time to time make sure you understand if it covers you or not In the mainland.

The most common plans used by expats in the island are Tripple S, MCS and Humana.

Your medicare also works just fine in the island but you may want a Medicare advantage plan which will be at little or no cost to you.

Your VA should also work in the island but some had issues being seen outside of the VA hospital, check on that.

If you meet the requirements for medicaid in the US, then maybe you can qualify for the equivalent program in PR called MiSalud (my health).

Hope this helps

PS. Because health care is lower in PR, some people do not get a health plan, that may work for you since it is cheaper, but if you end up in a bad situation with several weeks in a hospital it may drain your savings.

Also you may end up paying extra taxes if you do not have health insurance, at least for now as that requirement is still in place.

Great info thanks! We will need to get something soon...
By extra taxes are you referring to Obamacare or something else?
For some reason  I thought if you lived here in Puerto Rico you were exempt from Obamacare?

ReyP

Federal taxes, they penalize you if you do not have insurance, but that may be ending soon.

As to Obamacare, most states have the Obamacare program, PR get a lump cash award and the rest comes from the government to fund the MiSalud plan. However all private plans in PR are required to meet the Obamacare minimum coverage and options, so plans have to comply but you do not get the help from the federal government if you make little money.
