Nice post Wayne,聽 I agree and add a couple words.聽 聽Yes its not聽 good / bad聽 etc.聽 聽I聽 say it does not work FOR ME.聽 But it can and will work for many others!聽 I judge based on my needs but I have no right to judge based on anyone else's needs or wants.

Today I will share my frustration..........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.聽 聽I live in a nice neighborhood in聽 Puerto Plata but commute聽 to spend a few days a month in Santo Domingo.

Can I just say how聽 much EDENORTE does not work for me!!!!聽 Carumba聽 13.5 hours with no power!聽 And they treat me on the phone like I am some kind of moron!聽 I clearly know when the聽 electricity is out聽 its DARK, its HOT and聽 I am cranky.聽 Person today insisted the electricity was NOT OUT.聽 Seriously you cannot make this up.

And now the electricity is back and I am getting聽 my work done!聽

**I do have an inverter and batteries.聽 So I am not totally in the dark.聽 You dont run air conditioners,聽 fridge, microwave聽 etc on the inverter!聽 AND you conserve battery life by using as little as possible! 13.5 hours and I still had a fan and internet聽 running.

WayneColeman

Thx for your kind words. I get it. What works for you may not work for me. Well said. As far as the lights,聽 I feel you. We seem to go "dark" a lot even in clear weather. And when someone negates your experience it's even more frustrating. Good luck with that. It's something we all experience here.

To all the German expats that live in the Dominican Republic, could anybody please tell me where I can buy Gew眉rzgurken. I found pretty much everything else that my heart desires, but I can't stand sweet pickles and for a good Fr盲nkischer Kartoffelsalat, at least the way I make it I need German pickles.

Thank you very much for any response.

Vielen Dank im Voraus f眉r jede Antwort.

Hola,聽 I am seriously contemplating moving to Santiago (near HOM) however am seeing internet speeds not so good. VOIP is a must for me.聽 Anyone have any idea if fiber might be in the area? Thank you聽

ddmcghee

@cushion03yeti

If you find a place with a clear view of the northern sky, consider getting Starlink. The price for the mini, which is a portable unit, is very reasonable!

cushion03yeti

That鈥檚 a good suggestion.聽 Thanks.

CHRISTOPHER DAVID56

@cushion03yeti

Normally Santiago is full of fiber multiple vendors. Easy to check the providers websites for fiber coverage

cushion03yeti

Thanks, that is good to know.聽

cushion03yeti

My last question-聽 is Santiago a livable city for a digital nomad?聽 I absolutely love the city as I have been in Higuey for the last year (I want outt!).聽

Santiago聽 fits me well but the adverse weather conditions (I see online) has me聽 concerned that聽 my ability to work from home (along with internet speeds) will be impacted. Will he about 8 mins from HOMS.

The latter I feel a little better about although it鈥檚 kinda hard to gauge by only visiting and staying in a hotel.聽

Thank you very much.聽

Is there anyway to get a replacement debit card sent to the DR from my home bank using mailbox etc or any other mail service? Thank you

planner

Ask聽 your bank what they are willing to do.聽 there are lots of ways but if your bank isn't agreeable its a waste of time!

My bank in US (Chase) overnighted my card to my Punta Cana house

@cushion03yeti

Interesting data on the wide range of applicants for citizenship.聽 I've met several individuals and/or families from Ukraine in the DR, for example.

I would guess that DR is seen as a relatively safe, neutral country in which to reside and/or be a citizen.聽 There is a lot of turbulence in the Americas, Europe, the West Pacific and the world.聽

  1. Russia is a clearly growing threat to Europe.聽 I anticipate the Russian Bear will be strolling through Eastern Europe for much of the next 20 years, until Europe puts their big boy pants on and face the bully themselves.
  2. China is going to invade Taiwan at some point...though when is unknown -- their government has announced that reunification by force will happen if Taiwan doesn't "gracefully reunify in peace."聽 (my paraphrase)
  3. Actually, I was surprised China didn't invade prior to Biden's exit.聽 聽
  4. With Trump's return to the WH, China may be more hesitant to invade, lest they trigger treaty obligations that Trump will honor.聽 It's one thing to invade Taiwan; it's quite another
  5. OTOH, what will NOT happen, is China becoming less bellicose and more peaceful.聽 Many don't realize this at the moment, but China is militarily aggressing against Taiwan in multiple ways pretty much every day of the week.聽
  6. Taiwan realizes they're already in a war -- it just hasn't "gone kinetic" yet.
  7. The international trade situation is changing rapidly...one can argue for the better or for the worse over the long term, depending on your point of view...but in the short term, there is great uncertainty about conflicts, economies, trade and such.聽
  8. Uncertainties lead folks to create and/or implement Plan Bs or Cs.聽
  9. The US domestic situation is, of course, rather turbulent, as the realities of overextended budgets, a massive debt, and extensive Fraud, Waste and Abuse in the US government spending are dealt with.聽
  10. What will be the outcome in the US?聽 Anybody's guess.聽
  11. The certainty is that when the US economy catches pneumonia, most of our trading partners catch at least extreme bronchial infections.聽 Then, their trading partners catch at least nasty colds.聽
  12. Assuming US budget cuts are set into place...a whole lot of money gets removed from the world economy. Whether that money should have been going out in the first place, or not, is a matter of opinion.聽 The certainty is that less money sloshing around the world equals economic contractions for many, if not most nations.

No matter what your/my/our personal political beliefs may be...we are entering a unique international era that can be compared to 1929-1941.聽 Military empires want to extend their reach.聽 Political movements are increasingly nationalist and somewhat isolationist.聽 聽Many economies are hurting, and citizens thus want money to stay home, not go to other nations.聽

  1. I am NOT suggesting any of the sides are the good guys, or the bad guys.聽 Time will prove that soon enough.
  2. My point is the ensuing turbulence and uncertainty that exists -- and is growing -- wherever you look around the world, is leading thoughtful citizens to plan exit strategies from potentially unsafe or undesirable situations.

Hopefully, everyone finds safe landing pads.

Best,

Jim

One more personal opinion ... at least among the countries near to the United States, there seems to be a trade-off between two continuums: from most to least expensive and from most to least transparent/predictable legal system. The Dominican Republic seems to sit right in the middle of both -- in other words, a good trade-off.

And it's not SUPER high on all the 10-best/10-most lists, which seems like it might be a good thing?

As for the current world turmoil, IMNSHO it is completely unpredictable and I'm not going to even try, but I sure would like to establish some kind of tenuous foothold before this stuff develops much further. (And I am trying valiantly not to bug Lishali every two minutes "are we done yet? are we done yet?" 馃ぃ) I'm not sure the DR will remain a particularly safe haven indefinitely, sharing a land border with a major world flashpoint like Haiti, but the Haitians themselves have a saying, "[let's not] run from the rain and fall in the river (kouri lapli, tonbe larivy猫)." Trying to game this out would be hopeless; let's just live our lives and be kind when it's not too inconvenient :-)

^^I hope that's sufficiently politically neutral; I'd be OK with deleting if it did cross a line.

I work remotely and live in Santiago.聽 Internet is pretty stable, we have Altice.聽 The only concern are the consistent power outages.聽 Where we are in the city these can happen weekly but typically are very short outages, only 5-15 minutes.聽 But there have been times when the power was out for several hours.聽

Hello! My name is Annie, new to this forum. My fianc茅, my toddler and I are planning on moving to the Dominican Republic this summer. My fianc茅 is getting a work visa. My question is, what kind of visa would me and my child apply to when moving with him. I work remotely and will not need to work in the Dominican Republic but I do want to put my son in private school. Do I need some kind of legal status for this? Essentially just want to know what the best way would be for me and my son to enter the country legally as well. Would it benefit or hinder us in any way to get married before he applies for the visa? Or does it not matter if we are married or not? Would appreciate any info and tips! Thank you!

janeallenw

Hi!聽 You will want to double-check that this is still current and accurate, but there is this information:

A spouse can live legally:

Family Visa (Visa de Residente Familiar): The wife and child can apply for a family visa, which is specifically designed for the dependents (spouse, children) of individuals who are working in the Dominican Republic. This process typically requires the spouse鈥檚 work visa approval as the primary condition.

Residency through the Principal Work Visa Holder: After the primary applicant (the spouse with the work visa) is granted their visa, their family members can apply for residency status based on their relationship to the visa holder. The residency application may include providing proof of the relationship (marriage certificate for the wife and birth certificate for the child) and other necessary documentation such as:

Passport copies

Proof of legal status of the primary visa holder in the country (i.e., work visa)

Proof of income or financial stability of the primary visa holder

Application for Temporary Residency: Depending on the length of the work visa, the wife and child may first apply for temporary residency. Temporary residency is usually granted for a period of one year and may be extended. After one year, they can apply for permanent residency.

Legal Representation: It's often helpful to hire an immigration attorney in the Dominican Republic to assist in processing these types of applications, as there may be specific procedures or documentation requirements to follow.

Health Insurance: One requirement for residency may be proof of health insurance, so it would be important for the wife and child to have coverage while residing in the Dominican Republic.

he family would typically apply for their residency or family visa at the Dominican Republic's Directorate General of Immigration (Direcci贸n General de Migraci贸n), which handles all matters related to immigration. Here's a general process for where and how to apply:

If Applying from Outside the Dominican Republic (Before Arriving):

The wife and child can apply for a Family Visa (Visa de Residente Familiar) at the Dominican Embassy or Consulate in their home country. They would need to provide the necessary documents, such as the marriage certificate, birth certificates for the child, proof of the spouse's work visa, passport copies, and any other required paperwork.

After approval, they will receive the family visa, which allows them to enter the Dominican Republic legally.

If Already in the Dominican Republic (After Arrival):

Once the family members are in the Dominican Republic, they would apply for Temporary Residency at the Directorate General of Immigration (Direcci贸n General de Migraci贸n). They would need to go to the nearest immigration office, which is usually located in the capital, Santo Domingo, or other major cities across the country.

The required documents generally include:

Proof of relationship (marriage and birth certificates)

Valid passports

Proof of the primary visa holder鈥檚 legal status in the country (work visa)

Proof of income or employment (from the primary visa holder)

Health insurance or medical coverage in the Dominican Republic

The family would then go through an application process, which may include submitting documents, paying fees, and attending interviews or appointments.

Supporting Documents to Prepare:

Passport copies of the wife and child

Marriage certificate for the wife

Birth certificate for the child

A copy of the spouse's work visa and proof of employment in the Dominican Republic

Proof of financial stability (the primary visa holder's employment/income)

Health insurance or coverage in the Dominican Republic

Any additional documentation as requested by immigration authorities

Tip: It鈥檚 advisable to consult with the Dominican Embassy or Consulate before applying, as they can provide guidance on specific procedures, fees, and necessary documents, especially if applying from outside the country.

If already in the Dominican Republic, seeking assistance from an immigration lawyer or consultant can help expedite the process and ensure everything is handled correctly.

I hope it's helpful to you! Enjoy your stay!

The only change to the above is that the residency visa must be applied for from the country of origin, it can't be done from here.

I do recommend contacting our member Lishali Baez a really good immigration specialist. She can be reached on WhatsApp at +1 809-860-1231 or by email at libaezm@gmail.com

Good luck!

@planner

Thanks! So if I applied under the family visa, I would be considered a dependent? Does it matter that I too work, and I will probably be bringing in more money than my partner? I鈥檓 afraid that would disqualify me for dependent status. I will reach out to the lawyer, do you know if they speak English ?

wondering9

Yes, very good English.

Luck!
