Carpooling in Belize

Diksha

Hello everyone,

In order to move around in Belize, you will have to spend time on the road; for your work commute, to drop your children off at school or for everyday trips. Carpooling could be the right option for you. We would like to know your views on carpooling as a means of transport, and whether it is a practical and cost-effective option.

Is carpooling and cost-sharing common practice in Belize? What about the regulations in force?

For which types of journey does carpooling seem more suitable in Belize? How much is the cost of a carpool trip?

Is there an app or other means available to connect people looking to carpool? How do you find other carpoolers?

If you are carpooling in Belize, what precautions should you take to travel safely?

According to you, what are the advantages and disadvantages of carpooling?

Thank you for sharing your experience,
Diksha

These posts by the moderators make me giggle. If you consider hitchhiking carpooling then we’ve got it in spades. Most Belizians view hitchhiking as a perfectly acceptable means of transportation. But if you are the driver you assume liability if there’s an accident.

Our community has a FB page & group messaging which we use to coordinate rides into town via boat or car. Typically the driver is treated to lunch for driving or offered gas money or even given assistance carrying their groceries up their stairs.

The high cost of gas, the rough roads and remoteness are some of the reasons it is nice to ride share. And since we live far from town, it is a social excursion as well as practical.
