Hello and welcome Helene !

Please note that I have created this new thread from your post on the Belize forum so that members can guide you.

While waiting for their responses, feel free to read the articles under the Connecting to the internet and phone network in Belizesection of the website.

DigiCell and Smart are the two main cell phone and cell data providers, but your current cell company may offer an international plan (daily or monthly rate) that could get you by until you figure out what you want to use in Belize.

WhatsApp is a popular app to make and receive international calls. It will work on your current phone with wifi even if you don't have a Belize SIM card.

Short-term accommodations usually offer internet. If you will be renting or buying a place, you can find out the local internet providers. In my area of the Corozal district it is Centaur, Smart, or Belize Telemedia (BTL), but there are other options in different areas of the country.

Thanks for those valuable information. Do all these companies have a good signal coverage, like do I get decent phone recemption in the middle of the jungle miles away from towns?

@travelbeat there are definitely rural areas of the country where reception can be spotty, no different than traveling in most of our home countries. Generally speaking you'll have service around villages, even remote ones. Service is less reliable in long, remote stretches of unpaved road in extremely rural or mountainous areas, but we routinely travel to very remote areas that tourists and most expats will never see as part of our work.

We went with Smart.  Both they and Digi (possibly others) sell tourist SIM cards for pretty cheap. You get a SIM and a temporary local number so you can use navigation, make calls, etc.

I used to live in the north west of the USA, pretty rural. The level of coverage here is quite good in comparison. It is 4G Lte, but works well in my experience.

At your home, there are options but they'll depend on exactly where your home is. For example, we live right between 2 villages, both of which have fiber-optic internet thru Digi, but they told me they had no ability to give any kind of service at our location.

Smart has fixed wireless that works well if you are line. Of sight to one of their towers. A small antenna placed on a pole at the peak or your roof will likely work well if you are getting cell phone service at that location. Check their website for plans and installation costs. I pay 63BZD/month in Placencia.
