Buy or rent motorbike?

sanooku

I'm planning to stay in Vung Tau for about 6 months. Is it best to buy or rent a motorbike?

I've seen some blog posts saying we can easily buy a good bike for around 200-300 USD. Is this realistic?

Also, because there is the hassle of selling it when I leave, would it be simpler to just rent?

For buying, some suggest looking for shops that has the sign 'MuaBan'.

I'll be gobsmacked if you can buy one that cheap. Then again, Vietnam is full of surprises.

If you've got the money to buy it, you may as well and then sell it back to a shop or something.

If not, rent. Bear in mind if you rent as well, you should have repairs etc covered as well, which you won't if you buy it

Did find a place (through ) that does accept buy back. However, they are based in Hanoi. Seems a bit of a trak just to buy a motorbike.

Do you or anyone happen to know a place that does buy back in Saigon or Vung Tau. Or even Da lat.

The place I'm aware of with branch in saigon (popular with expats) is tigit bikes. I've contacted them. They do have some bikes for sale. However, no buy back scheme. Prices starting from 550 USD (as advertised on their website).

The bike you rent for 2 million you wont buy for 500usd. Rent a Honda Wave for 700k a month.

Simplify your life. Rent. 700k a month is a great price, I paid 1M in Saigon.
No worry when the 6 year old rental breaks down, they will get you going again. The 6 year old motorbike you buy will break down too, and getting your money out of it when you leave is iffy. Best case is you save $100 buying over renting.

PraiseGod

I will advice to hire or rent a bike because the stress of repairing a bike on its when its spoilt is a big problem.

My first months rental was up yesterday. Came across what looked like a motorbike repair shop just by chance (as I was riding around). There were some  (what seemed like) second hand bikes parked at the front. So I stopped off and asked the attendant, if they were for sale. Yes, they were. Prices ranged from 3.5 - 10 Mil VND. However, the 3.5 Mil one was worse for wear. They did have some good looking (can't tell actual condition without test riding) bikes for around 6 Mil.

However, without been introduced to that Mechanic or knowing how well he repairs bikes, I wasn't gonno take the leap just yet. Presumably he fixes these bikes and sells them off?...

Also, just knowing that the place I hired from will fix any problem when I make a phone call (I only had a small problem in the last month to do with the luggage stand coming loose) was enough to stick with hiring. So I hired the same bike for another month.

May be I'll buy if I find/meet a good mechanic. I use to tinker with motorbikes in the past, but recently I noticed that even changing a bulb can be a chore (as you have to take off the fairings on some bikes  :/ )

Any idea if this bike is worth 5 Million dong:

It's on sale at a local second hand motorbike shop.

Apparently, the 'wave' model is a chinese brand and can cause some problems later (even if it runs well when you test drive it).

Didnt you just answer your own question?

How do you spot the chinese assembled one from the other one. Any clues?

Check the engine, down the bottom should be stamped "Honda" on the casings. Also check the blue card, if it doesnt say Honda it most probably is a copy.

You did well by renting again.

6M is the low price for pretty much any bike. I bought one from the kind of shop you described against my GF's better wishes. It was OK, but I had continual problems with it. It was a PIA.

So after 4 months, she sold it for 4.5M and we looked for another bike. I picked the brand, based on advice from Tigit motors here in HCMC, but she decided on who we would buy from.  Worked well. I found a great bike for 9.5M
Single owner (NOT business of any kind) and with HCMC plates, so it's now in GF's name (unlike first one).

What type of brake on the front wheel?
Do not get anything with a drum brake. Ever. Don't even rent one like that.

Hello colinoscappe & gobot,

We just landed in VT today and I realize that this thread is 15 months old now.

Is it still possible to rent a Honda wave in VT for 700,000 VND a month?

If so, or not, can you please advise where are the best go to spots to rent a scooter in VT?

Many thanks.

Not sure why you are using that system to find something. The street number in your shot was 59, not 54. Why not drive down there and check it out. Here is their phone number 0934 727282

Still hoofing it, but looks like only a 30 minute walk from back beach.

Do you have any reco's for best sim card to get for VN with low cost data & calling plans?

Thanks for their phone number, I was able to leave my cell even with a Thai sim card. 1st time I tried the wireless international calling costing the same rates as if I called locally in Thailand.

I wonder if the VN telco's offer wireless calling? Open question...

Mobifone and Viettel are you best bets, both have an office in Truong Cong Dinh street. There is an electric buggy service in VT, flag one down and get them to take you where you want.

Much helpful info...

Many thanks

sounds reasonable, if you can recover part of the money. a 700k bike rental is only 4.2m or about 200, plus you don't have to buy a helmet or extras like a rack or repairs which is the money you recover when buying and selling back. the pricier the bike changes it somewhat. hehe, to be or not be...
